Both the Range Rover Velar and GLA have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Velar has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GLA’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Range Rover Velar. But it costs extra on the GLA.

To help make backing safer, the Range Rover Velar’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GLA doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the GLA have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar weighs 563 to 1299 pounds more than the Mercedes GLA. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

For better traction, the Range Rover Velar has larger standard tires than the GLA (255/50R20 vs. 235/50R18). The Range Rover Velar’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GLA (265/45R21 vs. 235/50R18).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Range Rover Velar offers optional 21-inch wheels. The GLA’s largest wheels are only 20-inches.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the GLA, it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Range Rover Velar has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The GLA 250 suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Range Rover Velar P380 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Range Rover Velar’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The GLA doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Range Rover Velar’s wheelbase is 6.8 inches longer than on the GLA (113.1 inches vs. 106.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Range Rover Velar is 3.1 inches wider in the front and 3.8 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the GLA.

The Range Rover Velar’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the GLA’s (59.7% to 40.3%). This gives the Range Rover Velar more stable handling and braking.

The Range Rover Velar R-Dynamic executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GLA 250 4MATIC (26.2 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 27 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Velar has a 3.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the AMG GLA 45 (8.4 vs. 4.8 inches), allowing the Range Rover Velar to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Velar P380’s minimum ground clearance is 4.6 inches higher than on the GLA 250 (9.9 vs. 5.3 inches).

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Velar amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Velar has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the GLA (.32 to .33) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Velar get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography is quieter than the GLA 250 4MATIC (38 vs. 42 dB).

The Range Rover Velar uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The GLA uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The engine in the Range Rover Velar is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the GLA. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

The Range Rover Velar (except Base)’s optional Entry and Exit Mode raises the steering wheel when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The GLA doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Range Rover Velar offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The GLA doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Velar to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The GLA doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Velar has a standard rear speed-sensitive intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GLA only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

Consumer Reports rated the Range Rover Velar’s headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the GLA’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Velar offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The GLA doesn’t offer headlight washers.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Range Rover Velar detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The GLA doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

When the Range Rover Velar is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The GLA’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the GLA offer optional heated front seats. The Range Rover Velar also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the GLA.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Range Rover Velar keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The GLA doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.

On extremely cold winter days, the Range Rover Velar’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the vehicle heater warms up. The GLA doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The Range Rover Velar HSE/SVAutobiography has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the GLA.
