Both the Discovery and GX460 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Discovery has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The GX460’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

For better protection of the passenger compartment, the Discovery uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The GX460 uses a body-on-frame design that has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the Discovery and the GX460 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available around view monitors.

On the EPA test cycle the Discovery supercharged V6 gets better fuel mileage than the GX460 (16 city/21 hwy vs. 15 city/19 hwy).

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Discovery’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The GX460 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

For better traction, the Discovery’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GX460 (285/40R22 vs. 265/60R18).

The Discovery’s optional tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GX460’s 60 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Discovery has standard 19-inch wheels. Only 18-inch wheels are available on the GX460. The Discovery offers optional 22-inch wheels.

For superior ride and handling, the Land Rover Discovery has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Lexus GX460 has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Discovery’s wheelbase is 5.2 inches longer than on the GX460 (115 inches vs. 109.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the Discovery is 4.1 inches wider in the front and 4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the GX460.

For greater off-road capability the Discovery has a greater minimum ground clearance than the GX460 (8.7 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Discovery to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Discovery Air Suspension’s minimum ground clearance is 3 inches higher than on the GX460 (11.1 vs. 8.1 inches).

The Land Rover Discovery may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 300 to 400 pounds less than the Lexus GX460.

Unibody construction lowers the Discovery’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The GX460 uses body-on-frame design instead.

The front grille of the Discovery uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The GX460 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Discovery has 1.4 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front hip room, 5 inches more front shoulder room, 3.5 inches more rear legroom, .5 inches more rear hip room, 2.2 inches more rear shoulder room, 2.7 inches more third row headroom and 4.2 inches more third row legroom than the GX460.

Flexibility is maximized at the game, campground or a drive-in theatre in the Discovery when its optional tailgating rear seats are deployed, allowing people to sit facing out of the liftgate. (Do not use while vehicle is in motion.) The GX460 doesn’t offer tailgating seats.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers or raises the Discovery’s optional second and third row seats, to make changing between cargo and passengers easier. The GX460 doesn’t offer automatic folding second row seats.

The Discovery’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The GX460’s swing out door blocks loading from the passenger’s side.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the Discovery has a standard power liftgate that opens and closes automatically by pressing a button, or optionally by just kicking your foot under the back bumper, completely leaving your hands free. The GX460 doesn’t offer a power cargo door.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the GX460, the Discovery HSE/HSE Luxury has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Discovery HSE/HSE Luxury offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The GX460 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The Discovery’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The GX460’s parking brake has to released manually.

The Discovery’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The GX460’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Discovery to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The GX460 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

The Discovery’s power mirror controls are mounted on the door for easy access. The GX460’s power mirror controls are on the dash where they are possibly hidden by the steering wheel and are awkward to manipulate.

The Discovery offers optional heated front, second and third row seats that keep the driver and passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Lexus doesn’t offer heated seats in the third row of the GX460.

Optional air-conditioned the front and second row seats keep the Discovery’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The GX460 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats for the second row.

The Discovery’s Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The GX460 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
