The Arteon offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Camry doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.
Both the Arteon and the Camry have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems and around view monitors.
The Arteon comes with a full 6-year/72000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car. The Camry’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 3 years and 36,000 miles sooner.
The Arteon’s corrosion warranty is 5 years longer than the Camry’s (10 vs. 5 years).
The Volkswagen Arteon’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Camry’s engines use an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.
The Arteon’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 65 more horsepower (268 vs. 203) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 184) than the Camry’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4 cyl. The Arteon’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 62 more horsepower (268 vs. 206) and 72 lbs.-ft. more torque (258 vs. 186) than the Camry XSE’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4 cyl.
In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Arteon’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Camry doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.
The Arteon has 2.9 gallons more fuel capacity than the Camry L’s standard fuel tank (17.4 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Arteon has 1.4 gallons more fuel capacity than the Camry LE/SE/XLE/XSE’s standard fuel tank (17.4 vs. 16 gallons).
For better stopping power the Arteon’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Camry:
For better traction, the Arteon has larger tires than the Camry (245/45R18 vs. 205/65R16). The Arteon’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Camry (245/45R18 vs. 235/45R18).
The Arteon’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Camry L’s standard 65 series tires.
For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Arteon has standard 18-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the Camry L. The Arteon’s optional 20-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels on the Camry XSE.
The Arteon has a standard driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The Camry’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.
The Arteon has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Camry doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.
Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Arteon a Large car, while the Camry is rated a Mid-size.
The Arteon has a much larger trunk than the Camry (27.2 vs. 15.1 cubic feet). The Arteon has a much larger trunk than the Camry L (27.2 vs. 14.1 cubic feet).
To allow full utilization of available cargo room, the Arteon’s hatch uses gas strut supported hinges that don’t intrude into the cargo area. Its intrusive beam hinge reduces the Camry’s useful trunk space.
The Arteon’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Camry L doesn’t offer folding rear seats.
To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Arteon SEL Premium’s power liftgate can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Camry doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.
When two different drivers share the Arteon SEL/SEL Premium, the memory seats and mirrors make it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position and outside mirror angle. The Camry doesn’t offer a memory system.
The Arteon’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Camry’s intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.
To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Arteon R-Line/SEL/SEL Premium has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Camry doesn’t offer cornering lights.
The Arteon’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. Heated mirrors cost extra on the Camry and aren’t offered on the Camry L.
The Arteon offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Camry offers an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.
The Arteon has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats are only available on the Camry XLE/XSE. The Arteon SEL Premium also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the Camry.
Standard air-conditioned seats in the Arteon SEL Premium keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Camry doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
On extremely cold winter days, the Arteon SEL Premium’s standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Camry doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.
The Arteon has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the Camry and isn’t available on the Camry L.
The Arteon’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Camry L doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.
Both the Arteon and the Camry offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Arteon has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Camry doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.
The Arteon’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Camry doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
