For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Discovery have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The BMW X7 doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

Both the Discovery and the X7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors, available crash mitigating brakes, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The Discovery’s 3.0 supercharged V6 produces 5 more horsepower (340 vs. 335) and 2 lbs.-ft. more torque (332 vs. 330) than the X7 xDrive40i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6 cyl.

The Discovery’s 3.0 turbo V6 diesel produces 113 lbs.-ft. more torque (443 vs. 330) than the X7 xDrive40i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Discovery Td6 gets better fuel mileage than the X7 xDrive40i (21 city/26 hwy vs. 20 city/25 hwy).

The Discovery Gas’ standard fuel tank has 1.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the X7 (23.5 vs. 21.9 gallons).

Tires and Wheels

The Discovery offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X7, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Discovery’s turning circle is 2.4 feet tighter than the X7’s (40.4 feet vs. 42.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Discovery Air Suspension has a 2.4 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X7 (11.1 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Discovery to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Land Rover Discovery may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 700 pounds less than the BMW X7.

The Discovery is 7.6 inches shorter than the X7, making the Discovery easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Discovery has .4 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 1.3 inches more rear shoulder room, .9 inches more third row headroom and .2 inches more third row legroom than the X7.

Cargo Capacity

The Discovery’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X7’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Discovery’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The X7 doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Discovery’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the X7’s (8201 vs. 7500 pounds).

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Discovery to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The X7 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.
