Safety

The Discovery Sport (except SE)’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Q7 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Discovery Sport and the Q7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Engine

The Discovery Sport’s optional 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 38 more horsepower (286 vs. 248) and 22 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 273) than the Q7 45 TFSI’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Discovery Sport with its standard turbo 4 cyl. gets better fuel mileage than the Q7 45 TFSI (21 city/25 hwy vs. 19 city/25 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the Discovery Sport’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The Q7 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Q7.

Tires and Wheels

The Discovery Sport has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Q7; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some models of the Q7 don’t even offer run-flats.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Discovery Sport’s turning circle is 2.4 feet tighter than the Q7’s (38.3 feet vs. 40.7 feet).

Chassis

The Land Rover Discovery Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 750 to 950 pounds less than the Audi Q7.

The Discovery Sport is 1 foot, 6.6 inches shorter than the Q7, making the Discovery Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Discovery Sport has 1.7 inches more front headroom, .3 inches more front legroom and .5 inches more rear legroom than the Q7.

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Discovery Sport has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Q7 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

The Discovery Sport HSE’s optional Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Q7 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
