Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Q70 offers optional Backup Collision Intervention which use rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The S-Class doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To help make backing safer, the Q70’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The S-Class doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Q70 and the S-Class have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems and blind spot warning systems.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and with its optional front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Q70 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 149 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The S-Class has not been tested, yet.

The Q70 comes with a full 4-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The S-Class’ 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 10,000 miles sooner.

Infiniti’s powertrain warranty covers the Q70 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Mercedes covers the S-Class. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the S-Class ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Q70’s corrosion warranty is 2 years longer than the S-Class’ (7 vs. 5 years).

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Q70’s reliability 42 points higher than the S-Class.

Suspension and Handling

The Q70 3.7 LUXE handles at .87 G’s, while the S 550e pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Q70 3.7 LUXE executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the S 560 (25.9 seconds @ .7 average G’s vs. 26.5 seconds @ .7 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Q70’s turning circle is 1.4 feet tighter than the S AMG S 65’s (36.7 feet vs. 38.1 feet). The Q70 AWD’s turning circle is 3 feet tighter than the S 450/560’s (37.4 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

The Infiniti Q70 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 750 to 800 pounds less than the Mercedes S-Class.

The design of the Infiniti Q70 amounts to more than styling. The Q70 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the S-Class (.27 to .28) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q70 get better fuel mileage.

The Q70 uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The S-Class doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Cargo Capacity

The Q70 has a much larger trunk than the Maybach S-Class (14.9 vs. 12.3 cubic feet).

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Infiniti service is better than Mercedes. J.D. Power ranks Infiniti first in service department satisfaction. With a 8% lower rating, Mercedes is ranked 6th.

Economic Advantages

The Q70 will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the Q70 will retain 33.61% to 37.74% of its original price after five years, while the S-Class only retains 30.95% to 33.39%.
