Both the Clarity Fuel Cell and the Mirai have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems and rearview cameras.


The Clarity Fuel Cell’s electric motor produces 23 more horsepower (174 vs. 151) than the Mirai’s electric motor.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Clarity Fuel Cell gets better fuel mileage than the Mirai (68 city/67 hwy vs. 67 city/67 hwy MPGe).

The Clarity Fuel Cell’s maximum driving range is 360 miles, 15% further than the Mirai’s 312-mile range.

For better stopping power the Clarity Fuel Cell’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Mirai:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Clarity Fuel Cell has larger tires than the Mirai (235/45R18 vs. 215/55R17).

The Clarity Fuel Cell’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Mirai’s standard 55 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Clarity Fuel Cell has standard 18-inch wheels. Only 17-inch wheels are available on the Mirai.

Suspension and Handling

For superior ride and handling, the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell has fully independent front and rear suspensions. An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Toyota Mirai has a rear torsion beam axle, with a semi-independent rear suspension.

The Clarity Fuel Cell has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Clarity Fuel Cell flat and controlled during cornering. The Mirai’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Clarity Fuel Cell is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 1.5 inches wider in the rear than on the Mirai.

The Clarity Fuel Cell handles at .81 G’s, while the Mirai pulls only .74 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Clarity Fuel Cell executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the Mirai (28 seconds @ .59 average G’s vs. 28.8 seconds @ .57 average G’s).


As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the Clarity Fuel Cell is quieter than the Mirai (34 vs. 36 dB).

Passenger Space

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Clarity Fuel Cell a Mid-size car, while the Mirai is rated a Subcompact.

The Clarity Fuel Cell has standard seating for 5 passengers; the Mirai can only carry 4.

The Clarity Fuel Cell has 15.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Mirai (101.5 vs. 85.7).

The Clarity Fuel Cell has .6 inches more front headroom, 2.4 inches more front hip room, 5.4 inches more front shoulder room, .3 inches more rear headroom, 6.1 inches more rear legroom, 3.2 inches more rear hip room and 3.8 inches more rear shoulder room than the Mirai.

Cargo Capacity

The Clarity Fuel Cell’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The Mirai doesn’t offer folding rear seats.


The Clarity Fuel Cell has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Mirai doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Clarity Fuel Cell has a standard heads-up display that projects speed readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Mirai doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the Clarity Fuel Cell the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Mirai can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.


Car and Driver performed a comparison test in its June 2017 issue and the Honda Clarity Fuel Cell won out over the Toyota Mirai.

The Honda Clarity outsold the Toyota Mirai by almost 12 to one during 2018.
