Safety

Both the Shelby GT350 and the RS 5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and rearview cameras.

Warranty

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Shelby GT350 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the RS 5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the RS 5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 10 times as many Ford dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Shelby GT350’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 24 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

Engine

The Shelby GT350’s 5.2 DOHC V8 produces 82 more horsepower (526 vs. 444) than the RS 5’s 2.9 turbo V6.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Shelby GT350 has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The RS 5 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Transmission

The Shelby GT350 offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and fuel economy. The RS 5 doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

The Shelby GT350’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The RS 5 doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Shelby GT350’s standard brake rotors are larger than those on the RS 5:

Front Rotors

15.5 inches

14.8 inches

Rear Rotors

14.9 inches

13 inches

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Shelby GT350 has larger standard tires than the RS 5 (F:295/35R19 & R:305/35R19 vs. 265/35R19). The Shelby GT350R Coupe’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the RS 5 (F:305/30R19 & R:315/30R19 vs. 275/30R20).

Suspension and Handling

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Shelby GT350 is .4 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than on the RS 5.

Chassis

The Ford Shelby GT350 may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 300 pounds less than the Audi RS 5.

Passenger Space

The Shelby GT350R Coupe has 3.2 inches more front legroom and 1.2 inches more front shoulder room than the RS 5.

Cargo Capacity

The Shelby GT350R Coupe has a much larger trunk than the RS 5 (13.5 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

The Shelby GT350’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The RS 5 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

On a hot day the Shelby GT350’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the RS 5 can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

Recommendations

The Shelby GT350 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” for 8 of the last 15 years. The RS 5 has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.

The Shelby GT350 was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” for 4 of the last 24 years. The RS 5 has never been an “All Star.”
