Safety

The S5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The F-Type doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The S5 has standard Secondary Collision Brake Assist, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The F-Type doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the S5. But it costs extra on the F-Type.

The S5 Prestige has a standard Top and Corner View Cameras to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The F-Type only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the S5 and the F-Type have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the S5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 157 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The F-Type has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

The S5’s corrosion warranty is 6 years longer than the F-Type’s (12 vs. 6 years).

There are over 81 percent more Audi dealers than there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the S5’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Audi vehicles are better in initial quality than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 22nd in initial quality. With 17 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 31st.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Audi 8th in reliability, above the industry average. With 44 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 25th.

Engine

The S5’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 53 more horsepower (349 vs. 296) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 295) than the F-Type P300’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The S5’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 9 more horsepower (349 vs. 340) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 332) than the F-Type P340’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6. The S5’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 30 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 339) than the F-Type P380’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6.

Tires and Wheels

The S5’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the F-Type’s standard 45 series front tires. The S5’s optional tires have a lower 30 series profile than the F-Type’s optional 35 series front tires.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the S5’s wheelbase is longer than on the F-Type:

Chassis

The design of the Audi S5 amounts to more than styling. The S5 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .29 to .3 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is significantly lower than the F-Type (.35 to .36). A more efficient exterior helps the S5 go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the S5 get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the S5 Prestige Coupe is quieter than the F-Type R-Dynamic Coupe:

Passenger Space

The S5 has standard seating for 4 passengers; the F-Type can only carry 2.

Cargo Capacity

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, just kicking your foot under the back bumper can open the S5’s trunk, leaving your hands completely free. The F-Type doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Audi service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks Audi 8th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 32% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 20th.

Ergonomics

The S5 Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The F-Type doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the S5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The F-Type doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the S5 has standard extendable sun visors. The F-Type doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The S5’s sun-visors swivel front-to-side to block glare from the side windows. The F-Type’s visors are fixed into the windshield header.

The S5 has a standard dual zone air conditioning allows the driver and front passenger to choose two completely different temperatures so people with different temperature preferences won’t have to compromise. This makes both the driver and front passenger as comfortable as possible. Dual zone air conditioning costs extra on the F-Type.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the S5 Prestige has a standard Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The F-Type doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.

With standard voice command, the S5 offers the driver hands free control of the radio and the navigation computer by simply speaking. The F-Type doesn’t offer a voice control system.

Model Availability

The Audi S5 comes in coupe, convertible and four-door hatchback bodystyles; the Jaguar F-Type isn’t available as a four-door.

Recommendations

The Audi A5/S5/RS 5 outsold the Jaguar F-Type by over 11 to one during 2018.
