The Yukon XL (except SLE) offers an optional HD Surround Vision to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Suburban only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Yukon XL and the Suburban have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, front seat center airbag, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Yukon XL has a standard 220-amp alternator (250-amp - Yukon XL Diesel). The Suburban’s standard 150-amp alternator and largest (6.2 V8) 170-amp alternator aren’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Yukon XL has a standard 800-amp battery (900 Diesel). The Suburban’s 720-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2019 Auto Issue reports that GMC vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks GMC 3 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Yukon XL’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Suburban doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

An independent suspension allows the wheels to follow the road at the best angle for gripping the pavement, without compromising ride comfort. The Chevrolet Suburban has a solid rear axle, with a non-independent rear suspension.

The Yukon XL has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Yukon XL flat and controlled during cornering. The Suburban’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Yukon XL’s wheelbase is 4.1 inches longer than on the Suburban (134.1 inches vs. 130 inches).
