Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Yaris 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Volkswagen covers the Golf. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Golf ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The Yaris’ corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Golf’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

There are almost 2 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Yaris’ warranty.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

J.D. J.D. Power ranks Toyota second in reliability, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 12th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2019 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Volkswagen vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota third in reliability. Volkswagen is ranked 27th.

To facilitate fast shifting and allow the driver to focus on the road, the Yaris has a standard up-shift light to indicate when to shift, based on a value pre-entered by the driver. The Golf doesn’t offer an up-shift light.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Yaris detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Golf doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The Yaris XLE’s standard automatic temperature control maintains the temperature you set, automatically controlling fan speed, vents and temperature to maintain a consistent, comfortable environment. The Golf doesn’t offer automatic air conditioning.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Yaris is less expensive to operate than the Golf because it costs $559 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Yaris than the Golf, including $234 less for a water pump, $228 less for a muffler, $45 less for front brake pads, $304 less for a starter, $220 less for a fuel pump, $135 less for front struts and $50 less for a timing belt/chain.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Toyota Yaris will be $6530 to $7317 less than for the Volkswagen Golf.
