The Land Cruiser’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Defender doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Land Cruiser are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Defender doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Land Cruiser has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Defender doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Land Cruiser’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Defender doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Land Cruiser and the Defender have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The Toyota Land Cruiser weighs 550 to 1000 pounds more than the Land Rover Defender. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Land Cruiser 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Defender. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Defender ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Land Cruiser for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Defender.

There are over 7 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Land Cruiser’s warranty.

The design of the Toyota Land Cruiser amounts to more than styling. The Land Cruiser has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .35 Cd. That is lower than the Defender (.38). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Land Cruiser get better fuel mileage.

For excellent aerodynamics, the Land Cruiser has standard flush composite headlights. The Defender has recessed headlights that spoil its aerodynamic shape and create extra drag.
