Both the 86 and the Beetle have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the 86 for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Volkswagen doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Beetle.

There are over 89 percent more Toyota dealers than there are Volkswagen dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 86’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the 86 has a standard 390-amp battery. The Beetle’s 380-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the 86’s reliability 23 points higher than the Beetle.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Volkswagen vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 23 more problems per 100 vehicles, Volkswagen is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

The 86’s optional 2.0 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 26 more horsepower (200 vs. 174) than the Beetle’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The 86’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 31 more horsepower (205 vs. 174) than the Beetle’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

The flat cylinder configuration of the boxer engine in the 86 lowers its center of gravity, enhancing handling stability (That’s why Porsche uses boxer engines.). The Beetle doesn’t offer a boxer engine configuration.

The 86’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Beetle S’ standard 60 series tires. The 86 TRD Special Edition’s tires have a lower 40 series profile than the Beetle’s optional 45 series tires.

The 86’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. Volkswagen does not offer a locking feature on the Beetle’s power windows.

The 86 has a standard automatic headlight on/off feature. When the ignition is on, the headlights automatically turn on at dusk and off after dawn. The Beetle only offers an automatic headlight on/off feature as an extra cost option.

The 86 offers an optional center folding armrest for the rear passengers. A center armrest helps make rear passengers more comfortable. The Beetle doesn’t offer a rear seat center armrest.

The 86’s standard separate stalk mounted cruise control is close at hand. The Beetle’s standard cruise control is on an over-crowded turn signal stalk.
