For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Nissan Titan XD are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The GMC Sierra doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Titan XD has standard Rear Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Sierra doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Titan XD. But it costs extra on the Sierra.

The Titan XD’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Sierra doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Titan XD and the Sierra have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available daytime running lights and around view monitors.

The Nissan Titan XD weighs 946 to 2497 pounds more than the GMC Sierra. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Titan XD comes with a full 5-year/100,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire truck and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The Sierra’s 3-year basic warranty expires 2 years and 64000 miles sooner.

The Titan XD’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Sierra’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

For smoother operation, better efficiency and fewer moving parts, the Titan XD has an overhead cam design, rather than the old pushrod design of some of the engines in the Sierra.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Titan XD has a 200-amp alternator. The Sierra’s standard 170-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 8 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 12th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 15th in reliability. With 24 more problems per 100 vehicles, GMC is ranked 22nd.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2019 Auto Issue reports that Nissan vehicles are more reliable than GMC vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Nissan 11 places higher in reliability than GMC.

The Titan XD has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the Titan XD flat and controlled during cornering. The Sierra’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For greater off-road capability the Titan XD Crew Cab has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Sierra 1500 Standard Bed Crew Cab (8.2 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Titan XD to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Nissan Titan XD has a standard tailgate assist feature, which prevents the heavy tailgate from falling with a crash and causing injury. It allows adults and children to easily open and close the tailgate with one hand to better facilitate loading and unloading. Tailgate assist costs extra on the GMC Sierra.

Both the Titan XD and Sierra have bed indentations that accommodate 2x4’s for two-tiered loading, but the Titan XD also has indentations to separate the cargo box into three different sections length-wise.

The Titan XD’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Sierra’s (11000 vs. 7400 pounds).

The Titan XD’s standard power windows allow the driver or passenger to lower and raise the windows without leaning over or being distracted. Power windows cost extra on the Sierra.

The Titan XD’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The Sierra’s basic optional power windows’ front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

If the front windows are left open on the Titan XD the driver can close them at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Sierra can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Titan XD’s standard power locks allow the driver or passenger to lock or unlock all the doors at a touch without leaning over, or reaching to the back seat. Power locks cost extra on the Sierra.

The Titan XD’s standard speed-sensitive wipers speed up when the vehicle does, so that the driver doesn’t have to continually adjust the speed of the wipers. The Sierra’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted. The Titan XD’s optional wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield.

Insurance will cost less for the Titan XD owner. The Car Book by Jack Gillis rates the Titan XD with a number “8” insurance rate while the Sierra is rated higher at a number “10” rate.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Titan XD is less expensive to operate than the Sierra because it costs $164 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost less on the Titan XD than the Sierra, including $66 less for a water pump, $167 less for a muffler, $83 less for front brake pads, $89 less for fuel injection, $64 less for a fuel pump and $21 less for a power steering pump.
