Both the 370Z and the A5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Nissan’s powertrain warranty covers the 370Z 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the A5. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the A5 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 4 times as many Nissan dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 370Z’s warranty.

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the 370Z has a 150-amp alternator. The A5’s standard 110-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Nissan vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Nissan 7th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 20 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 22nd, below the industry average.

The 370Z’s standard 3.7 DOHC V6 produces 84 more horsepower (332 vs. 248) than the A5’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The 370Z NISMO’s standard 3.7 DOHC V6 produces 102 more horsepower (350 vs. 248) and 3 lbs.-ft. more torque (276 vs. 273) than the A5’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

The 370Z has 3.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the A5 (19 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the 370Z Sport/NISMO’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the A5:

Rear Rotors

13 inches

The 370Z’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the A5 are solid, not vented.

The 370Z stops much shorter than the A5:

Motor Trend

Suspension and Handling

The 370Z handles at .99 G’s, while the A5 Prestige Coupe pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The 370Z executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.4 seconds quicker than the A5 Prestige Coupe (24.9 seconds @ .73 average G’s vs. 26.3 seconds @ .71 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the 370Z’s turning circle is 4.9 feet tighter than the A5’s (32.8 feet vs. 37.7 feet). The 370Z Sport/NISMO’s turning circle is 3.6 feet tighter than the A5’s (34.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

The Nissan 370Z may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 550 pounds less than the Audi A5.

The 370Z is 1 foot, 4.5 inches shorter than the A5, making the 370Z easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The 370Z Sport/Sport Touring/NISMO/50th Anniversary Edition uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The A5 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

If the windows are left open on the 370Z the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the A5 can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the 370Z is less expensive to operate than the A5 because it costs $388 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the 370Z than the A5, including $66 less for a water pump, $226 less for a muffler, $59 less for front brake pads, $215 less for a starter, $4 less for fuel injection and $15 less for a fuel pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Nissan 370Z will be $1530 to $7997 less than for the Audi A5.

Consumer Reports® recommends the Nissan 370Z, based on reliability, safety and performance.
