The AMG E-Class Sedan’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Rapide doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.
For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Mercedes AMG E-Class Sedan are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Aston Martin Rapide doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.
The rear seatbelts optional on the AMG E-Class Sedan inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The Rapide doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

The AMG E-Class Sedan has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Rapide doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.
The Mercedes AMG E-Class Sedan has Daytime Running Lights to help keep it more visible under all conditions. Canadian government studies show that driving with lights during the day reduces accidents by 11% by making vehicles more conspicuous. The Rapide doesn’t offer Daytime Running Lights.
The AMG E-Class Sedan’s optional lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane and gently nudges the vehicle back towards its lane. The Rapide doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.
The AMG E-Class Sedan offers an optional Surround View System to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Rapide only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.
The AMG E-Class Sedan’s blind spot warning system uses digital cameras monitored by computer to alert the driver to moving objects in the vehicle’s blind spots where the side view mirrors don’t reveal them. The Rapide doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.
To help make backing safer, the AMG E-Class Sedan’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Rapide doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
The AMG E-Class Sedan’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Rapide doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.
The AMG E-Class Sedan has standard Mercedes-Benz Emergency Call, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Rapide doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.
Both the AMG E-Class Sedan and the Rapide have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and rearview cameras.
For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the AMG E-Class Sedan its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2019, a rating granted to only 55 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Rapide has not been tested, yet.
The AMG E-Class Sedan comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Rapide’s 3-year basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.
There are almost 11 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Aston Martin dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG E-Class Sedan’s warranty.
The AMG E-Class Sedan 63 S’ standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 23 more horsepower (603 vs. 580) and 162 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 465) than the Rapide’s 5.9 DOHC V12.
An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the AMG E-Class Sedan’s fuel efficiency. The Rapide doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.
In heavy traffic or at stoplights the AMG E-Class Sedan’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Rapide doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.
In its Green Vehicle Guide, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) rates the Mercedes AMG E-Class Sedan higher (5 to 6 out of 10) than the Aston Martin Rapide (3). This means the AMG E-Class Sedan produces up to 23.4 pounds less smog-producing pollutants than the Rapide every 15,000 miles.
A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes AMG E-Class Sedan, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the Rapide.
The AMG E-Class Sedan’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The Rapide doesn’t offer launch control.
The AMG E-Class Sedan offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the AMG E-Class Sedan can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Rapide doesn’t offer run-flat tires.
The front and rear suspension of the AMG E-Class Sedan uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the Rapide, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.
The AMG E-Class Sedan has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The AMG E-Class Sedan’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the AMG E-Class Sedan is 1.9 inches wider in the front than the track on the Rapide.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the AMG E-Class Sedan. The Rapide doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.
