For enhanced safety, the front and rear seat shoulder belts of the Lexus GS Series have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The Maserati Ghibli doesn’t offer pretensioners for the rear seat belts.

An active infrared night vision system optional on the GS Series helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera and near-infrared lights to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a night vision system.

The GS Series’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

The GS Series has standard Safety Connect®, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the GS Series and the Ghibli have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height-adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all-wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the GS Series 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Maserati covers the Ghibli. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Ghibli ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The GS Series’ corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the Ghibli’s (6/unlimited vs. 4/50,000).

There are over 2 times as many Lexus dealers as there are Maserati dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the GS Series’ warranty.

The Lexus GS Series may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 pounds less than the Maserati Ghibli.

The GS Series is 3.6 inches shorter than the Ghibli, making the GS Series easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the GS Series has a liquid-filled front engine mount. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The Ghibli uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The design of the Lexus GS Series amounts to more than styling. The GS Series has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .27 Cd. That is lower than the Ghibli (.29) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the GS Series get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the GS 350 is quieter than the Ghibli S Q4:

The GS Series has a larger trunk than the Ghibli (18.4 vs. 17.6 cubic feet).

With its sedan body style, valet key, locking rear seatbacks and remote trunk release lockout, the GS Series offers cargo security. The Ghibli’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the Ghibli, the GS Series offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GS Series offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Ghibli doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

If the windows are left open on the GS Series the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Lexus service department.) The driver of the Ghibli can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Consumer Reports rated the GS Series’ headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the Ghibli’s headlights, which were rated “Fair.”

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the GS Series has standard extendable sun visors. The Ghibli doesn’t offer extendable visors.
