Both the Range Rover Velar and Cayenne have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Velar has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Cayenne’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

The Range Rover Velar’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the Range Rover Velar and the Cayenne have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available around view monitors.

In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The Range Rover Velar has a standard Emergency Brake Assist to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The Cayenne doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Velar has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Cayenne (8.4 vs. 8.2 inches), allowing the Range Rover Velar to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Range Rover Velar P380’s minimum ground clearance is .3 inch higher than on the Cayenne Air Suspension (9.9 vs. 9.6 inches).

The Land Rover Range Rover Velar may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 550 to 1100 pounds less than the Porsche Cayenne.

The Range Rover Velar is 4.8 inches shorter than the Cayenne, making the Range Rover Velar easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Land Rover Range Rover Velar amounts to more than styling. The Range Rover Velar has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the Cayenne (.34 to .35) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Range Rover Velar get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the Range Rover Velar SVAutobiography is quieter than the Cayenne (38 vs. 40 dB).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the Range Rover Velar easier. The Range Rover Velar’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 29.7 inches, while the Cayenne’s liftover is 31 inches.

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Range Rover Velar’s optional rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Cayenne doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Velar to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Cayenne doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Range Rover Velar has a standard rear speed-sensitive intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Cayenne only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.
