Safety

Both the Range Rover Evoque and X4 have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Range Rover Evoque has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The X4’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

Both the Range Rover Evoque and the X4 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

Engine

The Range Rover Evoque’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. produces 11 lbs.-ft. more torque (269 vs. 258) than the X4 xDrive30i’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

Regenerative brakes improve the Range Rover Evoque’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The X4 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

Transmission

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Range Rover Evoque, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the X4.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Range Rover Evoque’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the X4:

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Evoque’s turning circle is 1.9 feet tighter than the X4’s (38.1 feet vs. 40 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Evoque has a greater minimum ground clearance than the X4 (8.3 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Range Rover Evoque to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 200 to 250 pounds less than the BMW X4.

The Range Rover Evoque is 1 foot, 3.4 inches shorter than the X4, making the Range Rover Evoque easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Evoque has a much larger cargo volume than the X4 with its rear seat up (21.5 vs. 18.5 cubic feet).

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Evoque’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The X4 doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Ergonomics

The Range Rover Evoque has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X4 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the X4, the Range Rover Evoque offers an optional driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Range Rover Evoque’s optional easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The X4 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Range Rover Evoque to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The X4 doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Range Rover Evoque offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The X4 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Recommendations

The Land Rover Range Rover Evoque outsold the BMW X4 by over two to one during 2018.
