Both the XE and CLA have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The XE has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The CLA’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.

When descending a steep, off-road slope, the XE’s standard All Surface Progress Control allows you to creep down safely. The CLA doesn’t offer All Surface Progress Control.

Both the XE and the CLA have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, driver alert monitors, available all wheel drive, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

The XE comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The CLA’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 10,000 miles sooner.

The XE’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the CLA’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the XE for 5 years and 60,000 miles. Jaguar will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Mercedes doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the CLA.

The XE 30t’s standard 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 75 more horsepower (296 vs. 221) and 37 lbs.-ft. more torque (295 vs. 258) than the CLA’s 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder.

On the EPA test cycle the XE 25t AWD gets better fuel mileage than the CLA 250 4MATIC Auto (24 city/34 hwy vs. 23 city/33 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the XE’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The CLA doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The XE has 3.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the CLA (16.6 vs. 13.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Jaguar XE, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the CLA.

For better stopping power the XE R-Dynamic’s brake rotors are larger than those on the CLA:

XE R-Dynamic

CLA

Front Rotors

13.8 inches

13 inches

Rear Rotors

12.8 inches

12.6 inches

The XE R-Dynamic’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the CLA are solid, not vented.

For better traction, the XE R-Dynamic S’ optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the CLA (F:235/35R20 & R:265/30R20 vs. 225/45R18).

The XE R-Dynamic S’ optional 235/35R20 front and 265/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CLA’s 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the XE R-Dynamic S offers optional 20-inch wheels. The CLA’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The XE has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the CLA; it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed. Some tire options on the CLA don’t have a run-flat feature, either.

The XE has a much larger trunk than the CLA (14.5 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the XE’s power trunk can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The CLA doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the XE to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The CLA doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

Consumer Reports rated the XE’s headlight performance “Fair,” a higher rating than the CLA’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The XE offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The CLA doesn’t offer headlight washers.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the XE to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The CLA doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

Both the XE and the CLA offer optional heated front seats. The XE also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the CLA.
