Safety

The F-Type has standard Autonomous Emergency Braking, which use forward mounted sensors to warn the driver of a possible collision ahead. If the driver doesn’t react and the system determines a collision is imminent, it automatically applies the brakes at full-force in order to reduce the force of the crash or avoid it altogether. The Shelby GT350 doesn't offer collision warning or crash mitigation brakes.

The F-Type offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Jaguar F-Type has Daytime Running Lights to help keep it more visible under all conditions. Canadian government studies show that driving with lights during the day reduces accidents by 11% by making vehicles more conspicuous. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer Daytime Running Lights.

The F-Type’s lane departure warning system alerts a temporarily inattentive driver when the vehicle begins to leave its lane. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a lane departure warning system.

The F-Type has standard Parking Aid to help warn the driver about vehicles, pedestrians or other obstacles behind or, optionally, in front of the vehicle. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a front parking aid.

To help make backing safer, the F-Type’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

The F-Type’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the F-Type and the Shelby GT350 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras and available blind spot warning systems.

Warranty

The F-Type comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The Shelby GT350’s 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty expires 2 years and 24,000 miles sooner.

The F-Type’s corrosion warranty is 1 year longer than the Shelby GT350’s (6 vs. 5 years).

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the F-Type for 5 years and 60,000 miles. Jaguar will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Ford doesn’t pay scheduled maintenance for the Shelby GT350.

Reliability

The Shelby GT350’s redline is at 8250 RPM, which causes more engine wear, and a greater chance of a catastrophic engine failure. The F-Type has a 6500 to 6800 RPM redline.

The battery on the F-Type is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the F-Type’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The Shelby GT350’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.

Engine

The F-Type R’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 24 more horsepower (550 vs. 526) and 73 lbs.-ft. more torque (502 vs. 429) than the Shelby GT350’s 5.2 DOHC V8. The F-Type SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 49 more horsepower (575 vs. 526) and 87 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 429) than the Shelby GT350’s 5.2 DOHC V8.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the F-Type’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The F-Type V6/V8’s standard fuel tank has 2.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Shelby GT350 (18.5 vs. 16 gallons).

Transmission and Drivetrain

The F-Type has a standard automatic transmission, for driver comfort, especially in the city. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer an automatic transmission.

All wheel drive, available in the F-Type, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Ford Shelby GT350 is not available with all wheel drive.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the F-Type R-Dynamic/R/SVR’s optional brake rotors are larger than those on the Shelby GT350:

The F-Type offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the F-Type offers optional 20-inch wheels. The Shelby GT350’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The F-Type offers an optional space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the Shelby GT350; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The F-Type’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The F-Type R Coupe handles at 1.00 G’s, while the Shelby GT350 Coupe pulls only .98 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the F-Type’s turning circle is 5.4 feet tighter than the Shelby GT350’s (35 feet vs. 40.4 feet). The F-Type AWD’s turning circle is 3.4 feet tighter than the Shelby GT350’s (37 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

Chassis

The Jaguar F-Type may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 300 pounds less than the Ford Shelby GT350.

The F-Type is 1 foot shorter than the Shelby GT350, making the F-Type easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The F-Type Coupe has a larger trunk than the Shelby GT350R Coupe (14.4 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).

With its convertible body style and remote trunk release lockout, the F-Type offers cargo security. The Shelby GT350’s non-lockable folding seat and non-lockable remote release defeat cargo security.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the F-Type Coupe offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Servicing Ease

The F-Type uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Shelby GT350 uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

Ergonomics

The F-Type Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

When three different drivers share the F-Type, the memory system makes it convenient for all three. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver and front passenger’s seat positions, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a memory system.

The F-Type’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The F-Type’s power parking brake sets with one touch and releases with one touch or automatically. The Shelby GT350 has a lever-type parking brake that has to be strenuously raised to engage properly. It has to be lifted up more and a button depressed to release it.

The F-Type has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The F-Type’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The Shelby GT350’s intermittent wipers change speed with vehicle speed, but can’t turn on and off or change speed based on changing rainfall.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The F-Type has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors available for the F-Type detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

The F-Type’s standard outside mirrors include heating elements to clear off the mirrors for better visibility. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer heated side mirrors.

When the F-Type is put in reverse, the passenger rearview mirror tilts from its original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirror into its original position. The Shelby GT350’s mirror doesn’t automatically adjust for backing.

The F-Type offers optional automatic dimming rear and side view mirrors which automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Shelby GT350 has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

On extremely cold winter days, the F-Type’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

The F-Type R-Dynamic/R/SVR’s optional Park Assist can parallel park by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Shelby GT350 doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Jaguar F-Type comes in coupe and convertible bodystyles; the Ford Shelby GT350 isn’t available as a convertible.
