The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests front crash prevention systems. With a score of 6 points, IIHS rates the Automatic Emergency Braking in the G70 as “Superior.” The S3 scores only 3 points and is rated only “Advanced.”
The G70 Prestige/Sport has a standard 360-degree Multi-view Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The S3 only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.
The G70’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The S3 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.
The G70 has standard Connected Care, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to get turn-by-turn driving directions, remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The S3 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.
Both the G70 and the S3 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available all wheel drive.
For its top level performance in IIHS driver and passenger-side small overlap frontal, moderate overlap frontal, side impact, roof strength and head restraint tests, its standard front crash prevention system, and its headlight’s “Good” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the G70 its highest rating: “Top Pick Plus” for 2019, a rating granted to only 55 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The S3 is only a standard “Top Pick” for 2019.
The G70 comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes free 24-hour roadside assistance. The S3’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 10,000 miles sooner.
Genesis’ powertrain warranty covers the G70 6 years and 50,000 miles longer than Audi covers the S3. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 10 years or 100,000 miles. Coverage on the S3 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.
Genesis pays for scheduled maintenance on the G70 for 3 years and 36,000 miles. Genesis will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the S3.
The battery on the G70 is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the G70’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The S3’s battery is in the hot engine compartment.
J.D. Power and Associates rated the G70 first among compact premium cars in their 2019 Initial Quality Study. The S3 isn’t in the top three in its category.
J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Genesis vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Genesis first in initial quality, above the industry average. With 43 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 22nd, below the industry average.
The G70 3.3T’s standard 3.3 turbo V6 produces 77 more horsepower (365 vs. 288) and 96 lbs.-ft. more torque (376 vs. 280) than the S3’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.
In heavy traffic or at stoplights the G70 2.0T Automatic’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The S3 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.
The G70 has 1.3 gallons more fuel capacity than the S3 (15.8 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.
An eight-speed automatic is standard on the Genesis G70, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the S3.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the G70’s wheelbase is 8 inches longer than on the S3 (111.6 inches vs. 103.6 inches).
For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the G70 is 1.7 inches wider in the front and 3.6 inches wider in the rear than the track on the S3.
The G70 handles at .95 G’s, while the S3 pulls only .92 G’s of cornering force in a Road and Track skidpad test.
The design of the Genesis G70 amounts to more than styling. The G70 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .28 Cd. That is lower than the S3 (.31) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the G70 get better fuel mileage.
Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the G70 a Compact car, while the S3 is rated a Subcompact.
The G70 has 7.8 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S3 (93.8 vs. 86).
The G70 has 3.2 inches more front headroom, 1.4 inches more front legroom, 1.5 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom and 1.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the S3.
The G70 has a larger trunk than the S3 (10.5 vs. 10 cubic feet).
To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the G70’s trunk can be opened just by waiting momentarily behind the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The G70 3.3T Prestige/3.3T Sport also has a standard power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The S3 doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.
The engine in the G70 is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S3. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.
The G70 has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The S3 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.
When two different drivers share the G70 3.3T/Elite/2.0T Manual/Prestige/Sport, the memory system makes it convenient for both. Each setting activates different, customized memories for the driver’s seat position, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster) and outside mirror angle. The S3 doesn’t offer a memory system.
The G70 3.3T/Elite/2.0T Manual/Prestige/Sport’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S3 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.
The G70 Prestige/Sport has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The S3 doesn’t offer a heads-up display.
The Proximity Key standard on the G70 allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Audi S3’s Audi Advanced Key doesn’t unlock the trunk.
The G70’s power window, power lock, power mirror and cruise control switches are lit from behind, making them plainly visible and easier to operate at night. The S3’s cruise control switches are unlit, making them difficult to find at night and operate safely.
The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The G70’s headlights were rated “Good” by the IIHS, while the S3’s headlights are rated “Acceptable.”
To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the G70 3.3T Elite/Prestige/Sport has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The S3 doesn’t offer cornering lights.
When the G70 3.3T/Elite/2.0T Manual/Prestige/Sport is put in reverse, both rearview mirrors tilt from their original position. This gives the driver a better view of the curb during parallel parking maneuvers. Shifting out of reverse puts the mirrors into their original positions. The S3’s mirrors don’t automatically adjust for backing.
Both the G70 and the S3 offer available heated front seats. The G70 Prestige/Sport also has standard heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the S3.
Standard air-conditioned seats in the G70 3.3T/2.0T Manual/Prestige/Sport keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The S3 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
On extremely cold winter days, the G70 3.3T Elite/Prestige/Sport’s standard heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The S3 doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.
The G70 is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S3 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.
Insurance will cost less for the G70 owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the G70 will cost $1100 to $4775 less than the S3 over a five-year period.
The G70 was chosen as one of Car and Driver’s “Top Ten” in 2019. The S3 has never been a Car and Driver “Top Ten” pick.
Motor Trend selected the G70 as their 2019 Car of the Year. The S3 has never been chosen.
