For better protection of the passenger compartment, the Durango uses safety cell construction with a three-dimensional high-strength frame that surrounds the passenger compartment. It provides extra impact protection and a sturdy mounting location for door hardware and side impact beams. The QX80 uses a body-on-frame design, which has no frame members above the floor of the vehicle.

Both the Durango and the QX80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Dodge Durango is safer than the Infiniti QX80:

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Durango has a standard 160-amp alternator (180-amp - Durango optional and 220 optional). The QX80’s 150-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Durango has a standard 850-amp battery. The QX80 only offers a 780-amp battery.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Infiniti vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 11 more problems per 100 vehicles, Infiniti is ranked 19th, below the industry average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2019 Auto Issue reports that Dodge vehicles are more reliable than Infiniti vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Dodge 5 places higher in reliability than Infiniti.

On the EPA test cycle the Durango gets better fuel mileage than the QX80:

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Durango V8’s fuel efficiency. The QX80 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Durango V6’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The QX80 doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Dodge Durango uses regular unleaded gasoline (mid-grade octane recommended with the 5.7 V8 engine for maximum performance). The QX80 requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 5 to 40 cents more per gallon.

The Dodge Durango may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 1000 pounds less than the Infiniti QX80.

The Durango is 9 inches shorter than the QX80, making the Durango easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Unibody construction lowers the Durango’s center of gravity significantly without reducing ground clearance. This contributes to better on the road handling and better off-road performance and stability. In addition, unibody construction makes the chassis stiffer, improving handling and reducing squeaks and rattles. The QX80 uses body-on-frame design instead.

The design of the Dodge Durango amounts to more than styling. The Durango has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .35 Cd. That is lower than the QX80 (.37). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Durango get better fuel mileage.

The QX80 prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.
