The Continental GT has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The SL doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Continental GT offers an optional Top View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The SL only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing safer, the Continental GT’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The SL doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Continental GT and the SL have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, night vision systems and lane departure warning systems.

The Bentley Continental GT weighs 914 to 1497 pounds more than the Mercedes SL. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Continental GT comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The SL’s 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

The Continental GT’s standard 4.0 turbo V8 produces 180 more horsepower (542 vs. 362) and 199 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 369) than the SL 450’s standard 3.0 turbo V6. The Continental GT’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 93 more horsepower (542 vs. 449) and 52 lbs.-ft. more torque (568 vs. 516) than the SL 550’s standard 4.7 turbo V8. The Continental GT’s optional 6.0 turbo 12-cylinder produces 177 more horsepower (626 vs. 449) and 148 lbs.-ft. more torque (664 vs. 516) than the SL 550’s standard 4.7 turbo V8.

As tested in Motor Trend the Bentley Continental GT turbo 12 cyl. is faster than the SL 550 4.7 turbo V8:

The Continental GT offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The SL doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

All wheel drive, available in the Continental GT, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Mercedes SL is not available with all wheel drive.

For better traction, the Continental GT has larger standard tires than the SL (F:265/40R21 & R:305/35R21 vs. F:255/35R19 & R:285/30R19). The Continental GT’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the SL (F:275/35R22 & R:315/30R22 vs. F:255/35R19 & R:285/30R19).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Continental GT has standard 21-inch wheels. Only 19-inch wheels are available on the SL. The Continental GT offers optional 22-inch wheels.

The Continental GT offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The SL doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Continental GT uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the SL, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Continental GT’s wheelbase is 10.4 inches longer than on the SL (112.2 inches vs. 101.8 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Continental GT is 2.9 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than on the SL.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Continental GT has an electronically controlled liquid-filled main engine mount. A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The SL uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The design of the Bentley Continental GT amounts to more than styling. The Continental GT has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the SL (.32). A more efficient exterior helps the Continental GT go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the Continental GT get better fuel mileage.

The Continental GT offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The SL doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

On extremely cold winter days, the Continental GT’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The SL doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Bentley Continental GT offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The SL doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
