The Continental GT has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The AMG SL doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Continental GT offers an optional Top View to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The AMG SL only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

To help make backing safer, the Continental GT’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Continental GT and the AMG SL have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, night vision systems and lane departure warning systems.

The Bentley Continental GT weighs 814 to 1210 pounds more than the Mercedes AMG SL. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

The Continental GT comes with a full 3-year/unlimited-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The AMG SL’s 50,000-mile basic warranty expires sooner.

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Continental GT’s fuel efficiency. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

In heavy traffic or at stoplights the Continental GT’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. The engine is automatically restarted when the driver gets ready to move again. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) The AMG SL doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system.

The Continental GT has 4.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the AMG SL (24 vs. 19.8 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

An eight-speed automatic (SMG) is standard on the Bentley Continental GT, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the AMG SL.

All wheel drive, available in the Continental GT, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Mercedes AMG SL is not available with all wheel drive.

For better traction, the Continental GT has larger standard tires than the AMG SL (F:265/40R21 & R:305/35R21 vs. F:255/35R19 & R:285/30R19). The Continental GT’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the AMG SL (F:275/35R22 & R:315/30R22 vs. F:255/35R19 & R:285/30R19).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Continental GT has standard 21-inch wheels. Only 19-inch wheels are available on the AMG SL. The Continental GT offers optional 22-inch wheels.

The Continental GT offers active sway bars, which help keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnect at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The AMG SL doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

The front and rear suspension of the Continental GT uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the AMG SL, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Continental GT’s wheelbase is 10.5 inches longer than on the AMG SL (112.2 inches vs. 101.7 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Continental GT is 2 inches wider in the front and 2.4 inches wider in the rear than on the AMG SL.

To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the Continental GT has an electronically controlled liquid-filled main engine mount. A computer-controlled electric current in the liquid changes its viscosity, allowing the mount to dampen the engine completely at all RPMs. The AMG SL uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.

The design of the Bentley Continental GT amounts to more than styling. The Continental GT has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .29 Cd. That is lower than the AMG SL (.32). A more efficient exterior helps the Continental GT go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the Continental GT get better fuel mileage.

The Continental GT offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Continental GT detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The AMG SL doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

On extremely cold winter days, the Continental GT’s optional heated steering wheel provides comfort, allowing the driver to steer safely and comfortably before the car heater warms up. The AMG SL doesn’t offer a heated steering wheel.

To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Bentley Continental GT offers an optional wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. The AMG SL doesn’t offer wireless personal charging.
