The Q5’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The Macan doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.
Both the Q5 and Macan have child safety locks to prevent children from opening the rear doors. The Q5 has power child safety locks, allowing the driver to activate and deactivate them from the driver's seat and to know when they're engaged. The Macan’s child locks have to be individually engaged at each rear door with a manual switch. The driver can’t know the status of the locks without opening the doors and checking them.
To help make backing safer, the Q5’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The Macan doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.
Both the Q5 and the Macan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all-wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, post-collision automatic braking systems, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.
For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Q5 the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 169 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Macan has not been tested, yet.
There are over 59 percent more Audi dealers than there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Q5’s warranty.
The Audi Q5’s engine uses a cast iron block for durability, while the Macan’s 3.0 turbo V6 and 2.9 turbo V6 engine uses an aluminum block. Aluminum engine blocks are much more prone to warp and crack at high temperatures than cast iron.
From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Audi vehicles are more reliable than Porsche vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Audi 4 places higher in reliability than Porsche.
On the EPA test cycle the Q5 Auto gets better fuel mileage than the Macan Auto turbo 4 cyl. (22 city/28 hwy vs. 19 city/23 hwy).
To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Audi Q5 uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The Macan requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.
For better maneuverability, the Q5’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the Macan’s (38.4 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The Q5’s turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the Macan Turbo’s (38.4 feet vs. 39.3 feet).
For greater off-road capability the Q5 has a greater minimum ground clearance than the Macan (8.2 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Q5 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.
The design of the Audi Q5 amounts to more than styling. The Q5 has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .32 Cd. That is lower than the Macan (.35 to .37) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Q5 get better fuel mileage.
For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Q5’s rear seats recline. The Macan’s rear seats don’t recline.
The Q5 has a much larger cargo volume than the Macan with its rear seat up (25.1 vs. 17.6 cubic feet).
Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Q5’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The Macan doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.
To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Q5’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The Macan doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.
The Q5 Prestige has a standard heads-up display that projects speed and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Macan doesn’t offer a heads-up display.
If the windows are left open on the Q5 the driver can close them all at the outside door handle or from a distance using the remote. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Macan can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.
Heated windshield washer nozzles are standard on the Q5 to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The Macan doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.
To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Q5 has standard extendable sun visors. The Macan doesn’t offer extendable visors.
To quickly and conveniently keep personal devices charged without cables tangling and wearing out, the Audi Q5 has a standard wireless phone charging system (Qi) in the center console. Wireless charging costs extra on the Macan.
The Q5 Prestige’s Park Steering Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Macan doesn’t offer an automated parking system.
According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Q5 is less expensive to operate than the Macan because it costs $109 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Q5 than the Macan, including $332 less for a muffler, $128 less for front brake pads, $145 less for front struts, $367 less for a timing belt/chain and $373 less for a power steering pump.
Consumer Reports® recommends both the Audi Q5 and the Porsche Macan, based on reliability, safety and performance.
The Audi Q5 outsold the Porsche Macan by over three to one during the 2019 model year.
