The NSX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The 488 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.
The NSX has all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The 488 doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.
The NSX’s blind spot mirrors use wide-angle convex mirrors mounted in the corner of each side view mirror to reveal objects that may be in the driver’s blind spots. The 488 doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.
The NSX offers optional AcuraLink, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to remotely unlock your doors if you lock your keys in, help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The 488 doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.
Both the NSX and the 488 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rear parking sensors.
The Acura NSX weighs 516 to 825 pounds more than the Ferrari 488. The NHTSA advises that heavier cars are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.
The NSX comes with a full 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The 488’s 3-year/100,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year sooner.
Acura’s powertrain warranty covers the NSX 3 years longer than Ferrari covers the 488. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the 488 ends after only 3 years.
The NSX’s corrosion warranty is 2 years and unlimited miles longer than the 488’s (5/unlimited vs. 3/100,000).
There are over 7 times as many Acura dealers as there are Ferrari dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the NSX’s warranty.
Regenerative brakes improve the NSX’s fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The 488 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.
A nine-speed automatic (SMG) is standard on the Acura NSX, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a seven-speed automatic is available for the 488.
All wheel drive, available in the NSX, provides the best traction for acceleration in wet, dry, and icy conditions. In corners, all wheel drive allows both outside wheels to provide power, balancing the car. This allows for better handling. The Ferrari 488 is not available with all wheel drive.
In an emergency stopping situation, many drivers don’t press the brakes with enough force to stop the vehicle in the shortest distance. The NSX has a standard brake assist system to detect emergency braking situations (by how hard and how quickly the brake pedal is pressed) and then automatically apply maximum braking immediately in order to help prevent a collision. The 488 doesn’t offer a brake assist feature.
The NSX has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The 488 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.
The NSX is 3.8 inches shorter than the 488, making the NSX easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.
To almost totally eliminate engine vibration in the passenger area, the NSX has liquid-filled engine mounts. The liquid helps further dampen engine harshness. The 488 uses conventional solid rubber engine mounts.
The NSX uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The 488 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.
The NSX’s entire steering wheel hub sounds the horn, facilitating hitting the horn in an emergency. The 488 has two small spoke buttons. These buttons can be hard to reach in an emergency.
The NSX’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The 488 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.
The NSX’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. Ferrari does not offer a locking feature on the 488’s power windows.
The NSX’s front power windows open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The 488’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.
The NSX’s standard power window controls are mounted on the armrest for easy access. The 488’s available power window controls are spread out on the center console where they can’t be seen without the driver completely removing his eyes from the road.
If the windows are left open on the NSX the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the 488 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.
The Keyless Access System standard on the NSX allows you to unlock the driver’s door, trunk and start the engine all without removing a key from pocket or purse. This eliminates searching for keys before loading groceries, getting in the vehicle in bad weather or making a hurried start to your trip. The Ferrari 488’s Keyless Start doesn’t unlock the doors or the trunk.
While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the NSX detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The 488 doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.
The NSX has standard heated front seats, which keep the driver and front passenger extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated seats aren’t available in the 488.
The NSX was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2017. The 488 hasn’t been picked since 2016.
