The NSX’s pre-crash front seatbelts will tighten automatically in the event the vehicle detects an impending crash, improving protection against injury significantly. The i8 doesn’t offer pre-crash pretensioners.

The NSX’s blind spot mirrors use wide-angle convex mirrors mounted in the corner of each side view mirror to reveal objects that may be in the driver’s blind spots. The i8 doesn’t offer a system to reveal objects in the driver’s blind spots.

Compared to metal, the NSX’s plastic fuel tank can withstand harder, more intrusive impacts without leaking; this decreases the possibility of fire. The BMW i8 has a metal gas tank.

Both the NSX and the i8 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

Acura’s powertrain warranty covers the NSX 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than BMW covers the i8. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the i8 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

The NSX’s 3.5 turbo V6 hybrid produces 204 more horsepower (573 vs. 369) and 56 lbs.-ft. more torque (476 vs. 420) than the i8’s 1.5 turbo 3-cylinder hybrid.

The NSX has 4.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the i8 (15.6 vs. 11.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The NSX has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The i8 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

A nine-speed automatic (SMG) is standard on the Acura NSX, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only a six-speed automatic is available for the i8.

The NSX offers a standard sequential manual gearbox (SMG). With no clutch pedal to worry about and a fully automatic mode, an SMG is much more efficient than a conventional automatic but just as easy to drive. The i8 doesn’t offer an SMG or a conventional manual transmission.

The NSX offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The i8 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

The NSX stops much shorter than the i8:

For better traction, the NSX has larger tires than the i8 (F:245/35R19 & R:305/30R20 vs. F:215/45R20 & R:245/40R20).

The NSX’s 245/35R19 front and 305/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the i8’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

The NSX has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The i8 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The NSX handles at 1.06 G’s, while the i8 Coupe pulls only .93 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The NSX executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.5 seconds quicker than the i8 Coupe (23.2 seconds @ .92 average G’s vs. 24.7 seconds @ .79 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the NSX’s turning circle is .7 feet tighter than the i8’s (39.7 feet vs. 40.4 feet).

The NSX is 8.9 inches shorter than the i8, making the NSX easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The NSX uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The i8 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the NSX is quieter than the i8 Coupe:

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the NSX easier. The NSX’s trunk lift-over height is 35.2 inches, while the i8’s liftover is 37 inches.

With its coupe body style and remote trunk release lockout, the NSX offers cargo security. The i8’s non-lockable remote release defeats cargo security.

The engine in the NSX is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the i8. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Acura service is better than BMW. J.D. Power ranks Acura 6th in service department satisfaction (above the industry average). With a 19% lower rating, BMW is ranked 11th.

The NSX’s optional easy entry system glides the driver’s seat back when the door is unlocked or the ignition is switched off, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The i8 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The NSX’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. BMW does not offer a locking feature on the i8’s power windows.

Insurance will cost less for the NSX owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the NSX will cost $435 to $1680 less than the i8 over a five-year period.

The NSX will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the NSX will retain 47.71% of its original price after five years, while the i8 only retains 33.99% to 35.51%.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Acura NSX will be $2046 to $16984 less than for the BMW i8.
