Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Discovery Sport doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Rav4 Hybrid (except LE) offers optional Rear Cross-Traffic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

Both the Rav4 Hybrid and the Discovery Sport have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, and its standard front crash prevention system, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the Rav4 Hybrid the rating of “Top Pick” for 2017, a rating granted to only 167 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Discovery Sport has not been tested, yet.

Warranty

Toyota’s powertrain warranty covers the Rav4 Hybrid 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Discovery Sport. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Discovery Sport ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the Rav4 Hybrid for 2 years and 25000 miles. Toyota will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Land Rover only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the Discovery Sport.

There are over 7 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Rav4 Hybrid’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota 17th in initial quality. With 64 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 31st.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Toyota second in reliability, above the industry average. With 113 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 30th.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Toyota Rav4 Hybrid uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Discovery Sport requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The Rav4 Hybrid has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer a CVT.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Rav4 Hybrid’s turning circle is 2.2 feet tighter than the Discovery Sport’s (36.1 feet vs. 38.3 feet).

Chassis

The Toyota Rav4 Hybrid may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 250 to 350 pounds less than the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Rav4 Hybrid is 8.5 inches narrower than the Discovery Sport, making the Rav4 Hybrid easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The front grille of the Rav4 Hybrid uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Rav4 Hybrid has .4 inches more front shoulder room, .8 inches more rear headroom and .1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Discovery Sport.

Cargo Capacity

The Rav4 Hybrid has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Discovery Sport 5-Passenger with its rear seat up (37.6 vs. 34.6 cubic feet). The Rav4 Hybrid has a much larger cargo volume with all its rear seats folded than the Discovery Sport with its rear seat folded (69.8 vs. 62.8 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Rav4 Hybrid XLE/XSE/Limited has standard extendable sun visors. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer extendable visors.

Recommendations

The Toyota Rav4 outsold the Land Rover Discovery Sport by over 35 to one during 2018.
