Toyota pays for scheduled maintenance on the 86 for 1 year and 15000 miles longer than Porsche pays for maintenance for the 718 Cayman (2/25000 vs. 1/10,000).

There are almost 7 times as many Toyota dealers as there are Porsche dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the 86’s warranty.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the 86 has a standard 390-amp battery. The 718 Cayman’s 340-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Toyota vehicles are more reliable than Porsche vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Toyota second in reliability. Porsche is ranked 11th.

Tires and Wheels

The 86 has a standard space-saver spare tire so you can replace a flat tire and drive to have the flat repaired or replaced. A spare tire isn’t available on the 718 Cayman; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the 86’s wheelbase is 3.8 inches longer than on the 718 Cayman (101.2 inches vs. 97.4 inches).

The 86 is 5.7 inches shorter than the 718 Cayman, making the 86 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Toyota 86 amounts to more than styling. The 86 offers aerodynamic coefficients of drag from .27 to .29 Cd (depending on bodystyle and options). That is lower than the 718 Cayman (.3 to .31). A more efficient exterior helps the 86 go faster and keeps the interior quieter. It also helps the 86 get better fuel mileage.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the 86 is quieter than the 718 Cayman:

The 86 has 28.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the 718 Cayman (76.5 vs. 48).

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the 86 easier. The 86’s trunk lift-over height is 25.8 inches, while the 718 Cayman’s liftover is 32.7 inches.

The 86’s standard power windows have a locking feature to keep children from operating them. Porsche does not offer a locking feature on the 718 Cayman’s standard power windows.
