Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Rogue are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The Niro doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

Over 200 people are killed each year when backed over by motor vehicles. The Rogue SV/SL has standard Rear Automatic Braking that uses rear sensors to monitor and automatically apply the brakes to prevent a rear collision. The Niro doesn’t offer backup collision prevention brakes.

The Rogue offers all-wheel drive to maximize traction under poor conditions, especially in ice and snow. The Niro doesn’t offer all-wheel drive.

The Rogue (except S) offers an optional Around View® Monitor to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The Niro only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

The Rogue SL has standard NissanConnect, which uses a global positioning satellite (GPS) receiver and a cellular system to help track down your vehicle if it’s stolen or send emergency personnel to the scene if any airbags deploy. The Niro doesn’t offer a GPS response system, only a navigation computer with no live response for emergencies, so if you’re involved in an accident and you’re incapacitated help may not come as quickly.

Both the Rogue and the Niro have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and rearview cameras.

Warranty

The Rogue’s 5 year corrosion warranty has no mileage limitations, but the corrosion warranty on the Niro runs out after 100,000 miles.

There are over 40 percent more Nissan dealers than there are Kia dealers, which makes it easier should you ever need service under the Rogue’s warranty.

Engine

The Rogue’s standard 2.5 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 31 more horsepower (170 vs. 139) than the Niro’s 1.6 DOHC 4 cyl. hybrid. The Rogue Hybrid’s standard 2.0 DOHC 4 cyl. hybrid produces 37 more horsepower (176 vs. 139) than the Niro’s 1.6 DOHC 4 cyl. hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The Rogue has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the Niro (14.5 vs. 11.9 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

The Rogue has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Niro doesn’t offer a CVT.

For better stopping power the Rogue’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Niro:

The Rogue’s standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs on the Niro are solid, not vented.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Rogue has larger tires than the Niro (225/65R17 vs. 205/60R16).

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Rogue S/SV/Hybrid has standard 17-inch wheels. Smaller 16-inch wheels are standard on the Niro FE/LX/EX. The Rogue SL’s 19-inch wheels are larger than the 18-inch wheels on the Niro S Touring/Touring.

The Rogue has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Niro doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires available on the Rogue can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The Niro doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Rogue has vehicle speed sensitive variable-assist power steering, for low-effort parking, better control at highway speeds and during hard cornering, and a better feel of the road. The Niro doesn’t offer variable-assist power steering.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Rogue is 1.4 inches wider in the front and .8 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Niro.

Passenger Space

The Rogue has 4.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Niro (105.8 vs. 100.9).

The Rogue has 1.5 inches more front headroom, 1.3 inches more front legroom, .3 inches more front hip room, .6 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear legroom, 3.8 inches more rear hip room and .7 inches more rear shoulder room than the Niro.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Rogue’s available rear seats recline. The Niro’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Rogue has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Niro with its rear seat up (39.3 vs. 19.4 cubic feet). The Rogue has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Niro with its rear seat folded (70 vs. 54.5 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Rogue SV/SL’s power liftgate can be opened or closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The Niro doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening liftgate.

Towing

The Rogue has a 1102 lbs. towing capacity. The Niro has no towing capacity.

Ergonomics

The Rogue SV/SL has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Niro doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

If the windows are left open on the Rogue the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can also lower the windows the same way. The driver of the Niro can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

While driving with high beams on, sensitive light sensors standard on the Rogue detect other vehicles which could be blinded and automatically switch to low beams. The Niro doesn’t offer automatic dimming high beams.

Both the Rogue and the Niro offer rear vents. For greater rear passenger comfort, the Rogue has standard rear air conditioning vents to keep rear occupants cool in summer or warm in winter. The Niro doesn’t offer rear air conditioning vents, only heat vents.

Recommendations

Consumer Reports® recommends both the Nissan Rogue and the Kia Niro, based on reliability, safety and performance.

The Nissan Rogue outsold the Kia Niro by almost 15 to one during 2018.
