The CLS’ driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The CT6 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the CLS and the CT6 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, lane departure warning systems, around view monitors and rear cross-path warning.


J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 15th in reliability. With 39 more problems per 100 vehicles, Cadillac is ranked 27th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Cadillac vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Mercedes 11 places higher in reliability than Cadillac.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the CLS 450 4MATIC gets better fuel mileage than the CT6 V6 AWD (23 city/30 hwy vs. 18 city/27 hwy).

Regenerative brakes improve the CLS’ fuel efficiency by converting inertia back into energy instead of wasting it. The CT6 doesn’t offer a regenerative braking system.

The CLS has 1.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the CT6 (21.1 vs. 19.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the CLS has larger tires than the CT6 (F:245/40R19 & R:275/35R19 vs. 235/50R18).

The CLS’ 245/40R19 front and 275/35R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series front and 35 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the CT6’s standard 50 series tires. The CLS’ tires are lower profile than the CT6’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the CLS 450 has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the CT6.

Changing a flat tire near traffic can be dangerous and inconvenient. The run-flat tires standard on the CLS can be driven up to 50 miles without any air pressure, allowing you to drive to a service station for a repair. The CT6 doesn’t offer run-flat tires.

Suspension and Handling

The CLS 450 4MATIC handles at .93 G’s, while the CT6 pulls only .81 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the CLS’ turning circle is .9 feet tighter than the CT6’s (39.1 feet vs. 40 feet).


The CLS is 9.1 inches shorter than the CT6, making the CLS easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Cargo Capacity

The CLS’ standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The CT6 doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the CLS. The CT6 doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.


The CT6 Premium Luxury/Platinum/Sport’s cornering lamps activate a lamp on the front corner when the turn signal is activated. The CLS’ optional adaptive cornering lights turn the actual headlight unit up to several degrees, depending on steering wheel angle and vehicle speed. This lights a significant distance into corners at any speed.

Economic Advantages

The CLS will cost the buyer less in the long run because of its superior resale value. The IntelliChoice estimates that the CLS will retain 38.73% to 45.11% of its original price after five years, while the CT6 only retains -5.72% to 36.79%.
