The middle row seatbelts optional on the AMG E 63 inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The XJ doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the AMG E 63. But it costs extra on the XJ.

Both the AMG E 63 and the XJ have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, driver alert monitors and available lane departure warning systems.


There are over 2 times as many Mercedes dealers as there are Jaguar dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the AMG E 63’s warranty.


J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are better in initial quality than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 15th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 56 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 30th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Mercedes vehicles are more reliable than Jaguar vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes 13th in reliability, above the industry average. With 34 more problems per 100 vehicles, Jaguar is ranked 25th.


The AMG E 63’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 263 more horsepower (603 vs. 340) and 295 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 332) than the XJ’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6. The AMG E 63’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 133 more horsepower (603 vs. 470) and 203 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 424) than the XJ Supercharged’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8. The AMG E 63’s 4.0 turbo V8 produces 28 more horsepower (603 vs. 575) and 110 lbs.-ft. more torque (627 vs. 517) than the XJR575’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down half of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the AMG E 63’s fuel efficiency. The XJ doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.


A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Mercedes AMG E 63, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the XJ.

The AMG E 63’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The XJ doesn’t offer launch control.

The AMG E 63 offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The XJ doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the AMG E 63 has larger tires than the XJ (F:265/35R20 & R:295/30R20 vs. F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19).

The AMG E 63’s 265/35R20 front and 295/30R20 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the XJ’s standard 45 series front and 40 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the AMG E 63 has standard 20-inch wheels. Smaller 19-inch wheels are standard on the XJ.

Suspension and Handling

The AMG E 63 has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The XJ’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the AMG E 63 uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the XJ, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The AMG E 63’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The XJ doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The AMG E 63 S Sedan handles at 1.01 G’s, while the XJL Supercharged pulls only .85 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.


The AMG E 63 Sedan is 5.6 inches shorter than the XJ, making the AMG E 63 easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver while cruising at 70 MPH, the interior of the AMG E 63 S Sedan is quieter than the XJ Supercharged (66 vs. 68 dB).

Passenger Space

The AMG E 63 Wagon has standard seating for 7 passengers; the XJ can only carry 5.

The AMG E 63 Sedan has .2 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom and .5 inches more rear shoulder room than the XJ.

Cargo Capacity

The AMG E 63’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The XJ doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the AMG E 63’s trunk can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The XJ doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Mercedes service is better than Jaguar. J.D. Power ranks Mercedes fifth in service department satisfaction. With a 45% lower rating, Jaguar is ranked 20th.


The AMG E 63 offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed and other key instrumentation readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The XJ doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

The AMG E 63 offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The XJ doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Mercedes AMG E 63 comes in sedan and station wagon bodystyles; the Jaguar XJ isn’t available as a station wagon.
