For better traction and acceleration, the Quattroporte has larger standard rear tires than the S90 (275/40R19 vs. 245/45R18). The Quattroporte’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the S90 (285/35R20 vs. 255/35R20).

The Quattroporte’s standard 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s standard 45 series tires. The Quattroporte’s optional 285/30R21 rear tires have a lower 30 series profile than the S90’s optional 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Quattroporte has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S90. The Quattroporte’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the S90.

The Quattroporte has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the Quattroporte uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The Quattroporte’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The S90 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Quattroporte’s wheelbase is 4.3 inches longer than on the S90 (124.8 inches vs. 120.5 inches).

The front grille of the Quattroporte uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The S90 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Quattroporte a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.

The Quattroporte has 12 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (114 vs. 102).

The Quattroporte has .8 inches more front headroom, 8.4 inches more front hip room, 6.8 inches more front shoulder room and 2.9 inches more rear hip room than the S90.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Quattroporte’s available rear seats recline. The S90’s rear seats don’t recline.

The engine in the Quattroporte is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the Quattroporte to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.

The Quattroporte’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Quattroporte’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The S90 does not have an oil pressure gauge.
