To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, All-Wheel Drive is standard on the Levante. But it costs extra on the GLE.

To help make backing safer, the Levante’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The GLE doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Levante and the GLE have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

For better traction, the Levante has larger standard tires than the GLE (265/50R19 vs. 255/50R19).

The Levante’s optional 295/35R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the AMG GLE 43’s optional 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Levante offers optional 22-inch wheels. The GLE’s largest wheels are only 21-inches.

The front and rear suspension of the Levante uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the GLE, which uses coil springs. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Levante’s wheelbase is 3.5 inches longer than on the GLE (118.3 inches vs. 114.8 inches).

The Levante’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the GLE’s (52.6% to 47.4%). This gives the Levante more stable handling and braking.

The Levante S handles at .91 G’s, while the AMG GLE 43 4MATIC pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Levante S executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 4.3 seconds quicker than the GLE 550e 4MATIC (25.5 seconds @ .74 average G’s vs. 29.8 seconds @ .57 average G’s).

For greater off-road capability the Levante has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the GLE (9.7 vs. 8 inches), allowing the Levante to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The design of the Maserati Levante amounts to more than styling. The Levante has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .31 Cd. That is significantly lower than the GLE (.37) and many sports cars. A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Levante get better fuel mileage.

The front grille of the Levante uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The GLE doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Levante has 1.3 inches more front headroom and .6 inches more rear headroom than the GLE.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Levante’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The GLE doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its liftgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Levante has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the GLE only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Levante offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The GLE doesn’t offer headlight washers.
