For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Maserati Levante are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X5 M doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The Levante has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The X5 M doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

To help make backing safer, the Levante’s optional cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The X5 M doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Levante and the X5 M have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and around view monitors.

The front and rear suspension of the Levante uses air springs for a smoother, controlled ride than the X5 M, which uses coil springs in front. Air springs maintain proper ride height and ride more smoothly.

The Levante’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The X5 M doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Levante’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the X5 M (118.3 inches vs. 115.5 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Levante’s turning circle is 3.6 feet tighter than the X5 M’s (38.4 feet vs. 42 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Levante has a 1.6 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X5 M (9.7 vs. 8.1 inches), allowing the Levante to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

The Maserati Levante may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 600 pounds less than the BMW X5 M.

The front grille of the Levante uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The X5 M doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Levante S is quieter than the X5 M 4dr Sport Utility (79 vs. 82 dB).

The Levante’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X5 M’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Levante’s available liftgate can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The X5 M doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Levante offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X5 M doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

To keep a safe, consistent following distance, the Levante offers an optional Adaptive Cruise Control, which alters the speed of the vehicle without driver intervention. This allows the driver to use cruise control more safely without constantly having to disengage it when approaching slower traffic. The X5 M doesn’t offer an adaptive cruise control.
