For better traction and acceleration, the Ghibli has larger standard rear tires than the S90 (275/40R19 vs. 245/45R18). The Ghibli’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the S90 (285/35R20 vs. 255/35R20).

The Ghibli’s standard 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the S90’s standard 45 series tires. The Ghibli’s optional 285/30R21 rear tires have a lower 30 series profile than the S90’s optional 35 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 18-inch wheels are standard on the S90. The Ghibli’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 20-inch wheels optional on the S90.

The Ghibli has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the S90, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The Ghibli has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The S90’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The front and rear suspension of the Ghibli uses coil springs for better ride, handling and control than the S90, which uses transverse leafs springs in the rear. Coil springs compress more progressively and offer more suspension travel for a smoother ride with less bottoming out.

The Ghibli’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The S90 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghibli is .5 inches wider in the front and 1.2 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the S90.

The Ghibli S Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the S90 T6 Inscription pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Ghibli S Q4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the S90 T6 Inscription (25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 26.3 seconds @ .68 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Ghibli’s turning circle is .3 feet tighter than the S90 18” wheels’ (38.4 feet vs. 38.7 feet). The Ghibli’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the S90 19” wheels’ (38.4 feet vs. 40 feet).

The Ghibli is 4.4 inches shorter than the S90, making the Ghibli easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Ghibli a Large car, while the S90 is rated a Mid-size.

The Ghibli has 6 cubic feet more passenger volume than the S90 (108 vs. 102).

The Ghibli has 1 inch more front headroom, .3 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom and 1.1 inches more rear shoulder room than the S90.

The Ghibli has a much larger trunk than the S90 (17.6 vs. 13.5 cubic feet).

The Ghibli’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The S90 Luxury Package doesn’t offer folding rear seats.

The engine in the Ghibli is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the S90. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the Ghibli to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Volvo doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the S90.

The Ghibli’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S90 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The S90 does not have an oil pressure gauge.
