The Ghibli offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The GS Series only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Ghibli and the GS Series have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available crash mitigating brakes and lane departure warning systems.

A hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs, drives the camshafts in the Ghibli’s engine. A rubber belt that needs periodic replacement drives the GS 300’s camshafts. If the GS Series’ cam drive belt breaks the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

The battery on the Ghibli is in the trunk, which protects it from hot underhood temperatures that can degrade battery life. By keeping the Ghibli’s battery 20 to 30 degrees cooler, its life is increased by years. The GS Series’ battery is in the hot engine compartment.

Regardless of its engine, the Ghibli’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Lexus doesn’t offer an automatic engine start/stop system on the GS Series.

The Ghibli has 3.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the GS Series (21.1 vs. 17.4 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Ghibli has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The GS Series doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Ghibli has larger standard tires than the GS Series (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 235/45R18). The Ghibli’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the GS Series (F:245/40R20 & R:285/35R20 vs. F:235/40R19 & R:265/35R19).

The Ghibli’s standard 245/45R19 front and 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 45 series front and 40 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the GS 300’s standard 50 series tires. The Ghibli’s optional 245/35R21 front and 285/30R21 rear tires have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile than the GS Series F Sport’s 40 series front and 35 series rear tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the GS 300. The Ghibli’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the GS Series.

The Ghibli has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the GS Series, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

The Ghibli’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The GS Series doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is 5.8 inches longer than on the GS Series (118 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghibli is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than on the GS Series.

The Ghibli S Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the GS 350 pulls only .88 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Ghibli S Q4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver quicker than the GS 350 (25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 25.7 seconds @ .70 average G’s).

As tested by Car and Driver while under full throttle, the interior of the Ghibli S Q4 is quieter than the GS 350 (78 vs. 79 dB).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Ghibli a Large car, while the GS Series is rated a Mid-size.

The Ghibli has 9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the GS Series (108 vs. 99).

The Ghibli has .8 inches more front headroom, .5 inches more front shoulder room, 1 inch more rear headroom and .8 inches more rear shoulder room than the GS Series.

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Ghibli easier. The Ghibli’s trunk lift-over height is 25.8 inches, while the GS Series’ liftover is 28 inches.

The Ghibli’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The GS Series doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ghibli’s trunk can be opened and closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The GS Series doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its trunk, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

The Ghibli has a maintenance free battery for long life without checking the battery’s water level. The GS Series doesn’t have a maintenance free battery, so the water level in the battery’s cells must be checked often to prevent damage.

A maintenance reminder system is standard on the Ghibli to save the owner time and money by calculating maintenance intervals for oil changes based on odometer mileage. This takes the guesswork out of keeping your vehicle in top condition and helps it last longer. Lexus doesn’t offer a maintenance reminder on the GS Series.

The Ghibli’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The GS Series’ standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Ghibli to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The GS Series doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.
