A hardened steel chain, with no maintenance needs, drives the camshafts in the Ghibli’s engine. A rubber belt that needs periodic replacement drives the RLX’s camshafts. If the RLX’s cam drive belt breaks the engine could be severely damaged when the pistons hit the opened valves.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Ghibli has a standard 850-amp battery. The RLX’s 550-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

The Ghibli’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 35 more horsepower (345 vs. 310) and 97 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 272) than the RLX’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6. The Ghibli’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 28 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 341) than the RLX Sport Hybrid’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6 hybrid. The Ghibli S’ standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 47 more horsepower (424 vs. 377) and 65 lbs.-ft. more torque (406 vs. 341) than the RLX Sport Hybrid’s standard 3.5 SOHC V6 hybrid.

Regardless of its engine, the Ghibli’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Acura only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the RLX Sport Hybrid.

The Ghibli has 6 gallons more fuel capacity than the RLX Sport Hybrid’s standard fuel tank (21.1 vs. 15.1 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Ghibli has 2.6 gallons more fuel capacity than the RLX’s standard fuel tank (21.1 vs. 18.5 gallons).

For better traction and acceleration, the Ghibli has larger standard rear tires than the RLX (275/40R19 vs. 245/40R19). The Ghibli’s optional rear tires are larger than the largest rear tires available on the RLX (285/35R20 vs. 245/40R19).

The Ghibli’s optional 245/35R21 front and 285/30R21 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 35 series front and 30 series rear profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the RLX’s 40 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli offers optional 21-inch wheels. The RLX’s largest wheels are only 19-inches.

The Ghibli has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the RLX, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

The Ghibli offers an optional driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads. The RLX’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Ghibli’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The RLX doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is 5.8 inches longer than on the RLX (118 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

The Ghibli’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (50% to 50%) than the RLX’s (57% to 43%). This gives the Ghibli more stable handling and braking.

The Ghibli S Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the RLX pulls only .80 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The Ghibli S Q4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.8 seconds quicker than the RLX (25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 27.3 seconds @ .64 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the Ghibli’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the RLX’s (38.4 feet vs. 40.5 feet).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Ghibli a Large car, while the RLX is rated a Mid-size.

The Ghibli has 5.9 cubic feet more passenger volume than the RLX (108 vs. 102.1).

The Ghibli has 1.2 inches more front headroom and 1.9 inches more rear headroom than the RLX.

The Ghibli has a much larger trunk than the RLX (17.6 vs. 14.9 cubic feet).

The Ghibli’s standard rear seats fold to accommodate long and bulky cargo. The RLX doesn’t offer folding rear seats, only a ski pass-through.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ghibli’s power trunk can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The RLX doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

The engine in the Ghibli is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the RLX. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because there are no rear spark plugs and the accessory belts are in front.

The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The RLX does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The power windows standard on both the Ghibli and the RLX have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Ghibli is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The RLX prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Ghibli to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The RLX doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Ghibli offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The RLX doesn’t offer headlight washers.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the Ghibli offers optional adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The RLX doesn’t offer cornering lights.
