For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Maserati Ghibli are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Cadillac ATS Sedan doesn’t offer height-adjustable front seat belts.

The Ghibli has standard Anti-Whiplash Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Anti-Whiplash Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

The Ghibli offers an optional Surround View Camera to allow the driver to see objects all around the vehicle on a screen. The ATS Sedan only offers a rear monitor and front and rear parking sensors that beep or flash a light. That doesn’t help with obstacles to the sides.

Both the Ghibli and the ATS Sedan have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes and lane departure warning systems.

The Ghibli’s standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 73 more horsepower (345 vs. 272) and 74 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 295) than the ATS Sedan’s standard 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. The Ghibli’s 3.0 turbo V6 produces 10 more horsepower (345 vs. 335) and 84 lbs.-ft. more torque (369 vs. 285) than the ATS Sedan’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6. The Ghibli S’ standard 3.0 turbo V6 produces 89 more horsepower (424 vs. 335) and 121 lbs.-ft. more torque (406 vs. 285) than the ATS Sedan’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6.

As tested in Car and Driver the Ghibli S is faster than the Cadillac ATS Sedan turbo 4 cyl.:

Regardless of its engine, the Ghibli’s engine automatically turns off when the vehicle is stopped, saving fuel and reducing pollution. (Start/Stop isn’t accounted in present EPA fuel mileage tests.) Cadillac only offers an automatic engine start/stop system on the ATS Sedan Auto.

The Ghibli has 5.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the ATS Sedan (21.1 vs. 16 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Ghibli has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

For better traction, the Ghibli has larger standard tires than the ATS Sedan (F:245/45R19 & R:275/40R19 vs. 225/45R17). The Ghibli’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the ATS Sedan (F:245/40R20 & R:285/35R20 vs. F:225/40R18 & R:255/35R18).

The Ghibli’s standard 275/40R19 rear tires provide better handling because they have a lower 40 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the ATS Sedan’s standard 45 series tires.

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Ghibli has standard 19-inch wheels. Smaller 17-inch wheels are standard on the ATS Sedan. The Ghibli’s optional 21-inch wheels are larger than the 19-inch wheels optional on the ATS Sedan.

The Ghibli has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the ATS Sedan, it requires you to depend on its run-flat tires, which limits mileage and speed before they are repaired. If a run-flat is damaged beyond repair by a road hazard your vehicle will have to be towed.

The Ghibli’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Ghibli’s wheelbase is 8.7 inches longer than on the ATS Sedan (118 inches vs. 109.3 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Ghibli is 4.9 inches wider in the front and 4.2 inches wider in the rear than on the ATS Sedan.

The Ghibli S Q4 handles at .91 G’s, while the ATS Sedan pulls only .83 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

The Ghibli S Q4 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.2 seconds quicker than the ATS Sedan (25.5 seconds @ .8 average G’s vs. 26.7 seconds @ .66 average G’s).

Because it has more passenger and cargo room, the EPA rates the Ghibli a Large car, while the ATS Sedan is rated a Compact.

The Ghibli has 17.1 cubic feet more passenger volume than the ATS Sedan (108 vs. 90.9).

The Ghibli has .2 inches more front headroom, 2.6 inches more front shoulder room, 2 inches more rear headroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the ATS Sedan.

The Ghibli has a much larger trunk than the ATS Sedan (17.6 vs. 10.4 cubic feet).

A low lift-over trunk design makes loading and unloading the Ghibli easier. The Ghibli’s trunk lift-over height is 25.8 inches, while the ATS Sedan’s liftover is 28 inches.

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Ghibli’s power trunk can be opened or closed just by kicking your foot under the back bumper, leaving your hands completely free. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer a power or hands-free opening trunk.

The Ghibli’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the ATS Sedan.

The Ghibli’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The ATS Sedan does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Ghibli’s front and rear power windows all open or close with one touch of the switches, making it more convenient at drive-up windows and toll booths, or when talking with someone outside of the car. The ATS Sedan’s rear power window switches have to be held the entire time to close them fully.

On a hot day the Ghibli’s driver can lower all the windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the ATS Sedan can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The Ghibli’s rain-sensitive wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically based on the amount of rainfall on the windshield. This allows the driver to concentrate on driving without constantly adjusting the wipers. The ATS Sedan’s standard manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

Heated windshield washer nozzles are optional on the Ghibli to prevent washer fluid and nozzles from freezing and help continue to keep the windshield clear in sub-freezing temperatures. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer heated windshield washer nozzles.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The Ghibli offers available headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer headlight washers.

A power rear sunshade is optional in the Ghibli to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer a rear sunshade.

The Ghibli has standard heated front seats. Heated front seats cost extra on the ATS Sedan. The Ghibli also offers optional heated rear seats to keep those passengers extremely comfortable in the winter. Heated rear seats aren’t available in the ATS Sedan.

Optional air-conditioned seats in the Ghibli keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The ATS Sedan doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats.
