Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Lexus LX 570 are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Audi Q8 has only front height-adjustable seat belts.

The LX 570 has standard Active Headrests, which use a specially designed headrest to protect the driver and front passenger from whiplash. During a rear-end collision, the Active Headrests system moves the headrests forward to prevent neck and spine injuries. The Q8 doesn’t offer a whiplash protection system.

Both the LX 570 and the Q8 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights and rearview cameras.

The Lexus LX 570 weighs 796 to 996 pounds more than the Audi Q8. The NHTSA advises that heavier vehicles are much safer in collisions than their significantly lighter counterparts.

Warranty

Lexus’ powertrain warranty covers the LX 570 2 years and 20,000 miles longer than Audi covers the Q8. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 6 years or 70,000 miles. Coverage on the Q8 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus 8th in initial quality, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2019 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Lexus first in reliability, above the industry average. With 18 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 8th.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Audi vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Lexus first in reliability. Audi is ranked 7th.

Engine

The LX 570’s 5.7 DOHC V8 produces 48 more horsepower (383 vs. 335) and 34 lbs.-ft. more torque (403 vs. 369) than the Q8’s 3.0 turbo V6 hybrid.

Fuel Economy and Range

The LX 570 has 2.1 gallons more fuel capacity than the Q8 (24.6 vs. 22.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Tires and Wheels

The LX 570 has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Q8, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which limits mileage and speed before replacement.

Suspension and Handling

The LX 570 has a standard automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The LX 570’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Q8 doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For better maneuverability, the LX 570’s turning circle is 4.8 feet tighter than the Q8’s (38.7 feet vs. 43.5 feet).

For greater off-road capability the LX 570 has a 3.1 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Q8 (8.9 vs. 5.8 inches), allowing the LX 570 to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Passenger Space

The LX 570 has standard seating for 8 passengers; the Q8 can only carry 5.

Cargo Capacity

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the LX 570 easier. The LX 570’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 28.8 inches, while the Q8’s liftover is 33.7 inches.

The LX 570’s cargo area is larger than the Q8’s in almost every dimension:

The LX 570’s rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the tailgate door to allow quicker loading of small packages. The Q8’s rear cargo window doesn’t open.

Servicing Ease

J.D. Power and Associates surveys of service recipients show that Lexus service is better than Audi. J.D. Power ranks Lexus second in service department satisfaction. With a 24% lower rating, Audi is ranked 8th.

Ergonomics

The LX 570’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Q8 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the LX 570 has a standard rear fixed intermittent wiper with a full on position. The rear wiper standard on the Q8 only has an intermittent setting, so in a hard rain visibility isn’t as good.

To help drivers see further while navigating curves, the LX 570 has standard adaptive headlights to illuminate around corners automatically by reading vehicle speed and steering wheel angle. The Q8 doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Optional air conditioned the front and second row seats keep the LX 570’s passengers comfortable and take the sting out of hot leather in summer. The Q8 doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The LX 570 has a 115-volt a/c outlet in the cargo area, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Q8 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Recommendations

The Lexus LX 570 outsold the Audi Q8 by over two to one during 2018.
