Safety

An active infrared night vision system optional on the GS Series helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera and near-infrared lights to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The G80 doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the GS Series and the G80 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front and rear side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive and rear parking sensors.

Reliability

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Lexus vehicles are more reliable than Genesis vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Lexus first in reliability. Genesis is ranked 12th.

Brakes and Stopping

The GS Series’ standard front and rear disc brakes are vented to help dissipate heat for shorter stops with less fading. The rear discs standard on the G80 3.8 are solid, not vented.

Motor Trend

Suspension and Handling

The GS 350 handles at .94 G’s, while the G80 3.8 AWD pulls only .86 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

The GS 350 executes Motor Trend’s “Figure Eight” maneuver 1.3 seconds quicker than the G80 5.0 (25.4 seconds @ .71 average G’s vs. 26.7 seconds @ .7 average G’s).

For better maneuverability, the GS Series’ turning circle is 1.4 feet tighter than the G80’s (34.8 feet vs. 36.2 feet). The GS Series AWD’s turning circle is 2 feet tighter than the G80’s (35.4 feet vs. 37.4 feet).

Chassis

The Lexus GS Series may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 450 to 850 pounds less than the Genesis G80.

The GS Series is 4.4 inches shorter than the G80, making the GS Series easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

As tested by Car and Driver, the interior of the GS 350 is quieter than the G80 5.0:

Cargo Capacity

The GS Series has a much larger trunk than the G80 (18.4 vs. 15.3 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the G80, the GS Series offers an optional passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The GS Series’ standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel and glides the driver’s seat back, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. An easy entry system costs extra on the G80.

The GS Series’ instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The G80 does not have an oil pressure gauge.

If the windows are left open on the GS Series the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. (This window function must be activated by your Lexus service department.) The driver of the G80 can only operate the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

Consumer Reports rated the GS Series’ headlight performance “Good,” a higher rating than the G80’s headlights, which were rated “Poor.”

Optional air conditioned seats in the GS Series keep the driver and front passenger comfortable and take the sting out of hot seats in summer. The G80 only offers an air-conditioned driver’s seat.
