Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Land Rover Range Rover Sport have pretensioners to tighten the seatbelts and eliminate dangerous slack in the event of a collision and force limiters to limit the pressure the belts will exert on the passengers. The BMW X7 doesn’t offer pretensioners for the middle seat belts.

Both the Range Rover Sport and the X7 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, side-impact head airbags, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, rearview cameras, available blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Range Rover Sport Td6 gets better fuel mileage than the X7 xDrive40i (22 city/28 hwy vs. 20 city/25 hwy).

The Range Rover Sport P400e can drive on battery power alone for up to 31 miles. The X7 must run its internal combustion engine to move.

The Range Rover Sport’s standard fuel tank has 5.7 gallons more fuel capacity than the X7 (27.6 vs. 21.9 gallons).

Tires and Wheels

The Range Rover Sport 5-Passenger offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the X7, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare or run-flat tires, either of which has mileage and speed limitations.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Range Rover Sport’s turning circle is 2.2 feet tighter than the X7’s (40.6 feet vs. 42.8 feet). The Range Rover Sport SVR’s turning circle is 2.1 feet tighter than the X7’s (40.7 feet vs. 42.8 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Range Rover Sport has a 2.2 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the X7 (10.9 vs. 8.7 inches), allowing the Range Rover Sport to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged.

Chassis

The Land Rover Range Rover Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 500 to 600 pounds less than the BMW X7.

The Range Rover Sport is 11.2 inches shorter than the X7, making the Range Rover Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The Range Rover Sport has 2.4 inches more front legroom, .7 inches more front shoulder room, .4 inches more rear headroom and 1.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the X7.

Cargo Capacity

The Range Rover Sport’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X7’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

To make loading groceries and cargo easier when your hands are full, the Range Rover Sport’s liftgate can be opened and closed just by waving your foot, leaving your hands completely free. The X7 doesn’t offer a hands-free gesture to open its tailgate, forcing you to put cargo down if your hands are full.

Payload and Towing

The Range Rover Sport’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the X7’s (7716 vs. 7500 pounds).

The Range Rover Sport has a much higher standard payload capacity than the X7 (1631 vs. 1202 lbs.).

Ergonomics

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Range Rover Sport offers optional dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The X7 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.

The Range Rover Sport offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The X7 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Recommendations

The Range Rover Sport was selected by Petersen's 4-Wheel & Off-Road magazine as their 2014 4x4 of the Year. The X7 has never been chosen.
