Both the Discovery Sport and the X5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, all wheel drive, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, around view monitors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

A nine-speed automatic is standard on the Land Rover Discovery Sport, for better acceleration and lower engine speed on the highway. Only an eight-speed automatic is available for the X5.

Suspension and Handling

For better maneuverability, the Discovery Sport’s turning circle is 3.1 feet tighter than the X5’s (38.3 feet vs. 41.4 feet).

The Land Rover Discovery Sport may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 850 to 1000 pounds less than the BMW X5.

The Discovery Sport is 1 foot, 1.3 inches shorter than the X5, making the Discovery Sport easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The design of the Land Rover Discovery Sport amounts to more than styling. The Discovery Sport has an aerodynamic coefficient of drag of .36 Cd. That is lower than the X5 (.36 to .38). A more efficient exterior helps keep the interior quieter and helps the Discovery Sport get better fuel mileage.

Passenger Space

The Discovery Sport has 2.2 inches more front legroom and 1.9 inches more rear legroom than the X5.

Cargo Capacity

The Discovery Sport’s cargo area provides more volume than the X5.

The Discovery Sport’s liftgate lifts up in one piece, completely out of the way of loading and unloading, while sheltering the cargo loading area. The X5’s tailgate’s top part raises up, but the bottom part lowers, getting in the way of loading and making an uneven surface for sliding cargo.

Unlike the driver-only memory system in the X5, the Discovery Sport HSE/HSE Luxury has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

To better shield the driver and front passenger’s vision, the Discovery Sport has standard dual-element sun visors that can block glare from two directions simultaneously. The X5 doesn’t offer secondary sun visors.
