Safety

The F-Type’s optional driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The S5 doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the F-Type and the S5 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, blind spot warning systems, front parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

The F-Type comes with a full 5-year/60,000-mile basic warranty, which covers the entire car and includes 24-hour roadside assistance. The S5’s 4-year/50,000-mile basic warranty expires 1 year and 10,000 miles sooner.

Jaguar pays for scheduled maintenance on the F-Type for 5 years and 60,000 miles. Jaguar will pay for oil changes, lubrication and any other required maintenance. Audi only pays for the first scheduled maintenance visit on the S5.

Engine

The F-Type P380’s standard 3.0 supercharged V6 produces 31 more horsepower (380 vs. 349) than the S5’s 3.0 turbo V6. The F-Type R’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 201 more horsepower (550 vs. 349) and 133 lbs.-ft. more torque (502 vs. 369) than the S5’s 3.0 turbo V6. The F-Type SVR’s standard 5.0 supercharged V8 produces 226 more horsepower (575 vs. 349) and 147 lbs.-ft. more torque (516 vs. 369) than the S5’s 3.0 turbo V6.

Fuel Economy and Range

The F-Type has 3.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the S5 (18.5 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

Transmission

The F-Type offers a manual transmission for better acceleration, control and fuel economy. The S5 doesn’t offer a manual transmission.

The F-Type Auto’s launch control uses engine electronics to hold engine RPM’s precisely in order to provide the most stable and rapid acceleration possible, using all of the available traction. The S5 doesn’t offer launch control.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the F-Type’s front brake rotors are larger than those on the S5:

The F-Type offers optional heat-treated ceramic brake rotors, which last ten to twenty times as long as conventional cast iron rotors, don’t rust, don’t fade during repeated high speed braking, and their lighter weight contribute to better braking, handling and acceleration. The S5 doesn’t offer ceramic brake rotors.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the F-Type’s optional tires are larger than the largest tires available on the S5 (275/40R19 vs. 265/30R20).

Suspension and Handling

The F-Type’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The S5 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the F-Type is .1 inches wider in the front and 2.5 inches wider in the rear than the track on the S5.

The F-Type’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (52.6% to 47.4%) than the S5’s (56.7% to 43.3%). This gives the F-Type more stable handling and braking.

The F-Type R Coupe handles at 1.00 G’s, while the S5 Prestige Coupe pulls only .94 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

For better maneuverability, the F-Type’s turning circle is 2.6 feet tighter than the S5’s (35.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet). The F-Type AWD’s turning circle is .6 feet tighter than the S5’s (37.1 feet vs. 37.7 feet).

Chassis

The Jaguar F-Type may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 350 to 500 pounds less than the Audi S5.

The F-Type is 8.7 inches shorter than the S5, making the F-Type easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

Passenger Space

The F-Type Coupe has 1.7 inches more front legroom and 1.2 inches more front shoulder room than the S5 Coupe.

Cargo Capacity

The F-Type Coupe has a much larger trunk than the S5 Coupe (14.4 vs. 11.6 cubic feet).

To make loading and unloading groceries and cargo easier, especially for short adults, the F-Type Coupe offers an optional power trunk, which opens and closes automatically by pressing a button. The S5 doesn’t offer a power trunk.

Ergonomics

The F-Type Auto has a standard remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The S5 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

Unlike the driver-only memory system optional at extra cost in the S5, the F-Type has standard driver and passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position and outside mirror angle and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The F-Type’s standard easy entry system raises the steering wheel, making it easier for the driver to get in and out. The S5 doesn’t offer an easy entry system.

In poor weather, headlights can lose their effectiveness as grime builds up on their lenses. This can reduce visibility without the driver realizing. The F-Type has standard headlight washers to keep headlight output high. The S5 doesn’t offer headlight washers.

Model Availability

The F-Type is available in both rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations. The S5 doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the F-Type third among midsize premium sporty cars in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The S5 isn’t in the top three.

The F-Type was chosen as one of Automobile Magazine’s “All Stars” in 2014. The S5 has never been an “All Star.”
