Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Honda CR-V are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Chevrolet Equinox doesn’t offer height-adjustable front seat belts.

The CR-V EX/EX-L/Touring’s driver alert monitor detects an inattentive driver then sounds a warning and suggests a break. According to the NHTSA, drivers who fall asleep cause about 100,000 crashes and 1500 deaths a year. The Equinox doesn’t offer a driver alert monitor.

Both the CR-V and the Equinox have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive, crash mitigating brakes, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems and rear cross-path warning.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Honda CR-V is safer than the Chevrolet Equinox:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH, results indicate that the Honda CR-V is safer than the Chevrolet Equinox:

For its top level performance in all IIHS frontal, side, rear impact and roof-crush tests, with its optional front crash prevention system, and its available headlight’s “Acceptable” rating, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety grants the CR-V the rating of “Top Pick” for 2018, a rating granted to only 85 vehicles tested by the IIHS. The Equinox was a “Top Pick” for 2017, but no longer qualifies under the tighter 2018 guidelines.

Warranty

The CR-V’s corrosion warranty is unlimited miles longer than the Equinox’s (unlimited vs. 100,000 miles).

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the CR-V’s reliability 18 points higher than the Equinox.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the CR-V third among compact suvs in their 2018 Initial Quality Study. The Equinox isn’t in the top three.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ December 2018 Auto Issue reports that Honda vehicles are more reliable than Chevrolet vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Honda 8 places higher in reliability than Chevrolet.

Engine

The CR-V LX’s standard 2.4 DOHC 4 cyl. produces 14 more horsepower (184 vs. 170) than the Equinox’s standard 1.5 turbo 4 cyl.

As tested in Motor Trend the CR-V LX is faster than the Chevrolet Equinox 1.5 turbo 4 cyl.:

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Honda CR-V uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Equinox with the 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. engine requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

Transmission

The CR-V has a standard continuously variable transmission (CVT). With no “steps” between gears, it can keep the engine at the most efficient speed for fuel economy, or keep it at its peak horsepower indefinitely for maximum acceleration. The Equinox doesn’t offer a CVT.

For better traction, the CR-V has larger tires than the Equinox (235/65R17 vs. 225/65R17).

Suspension and Handling

The CR-V has standard front and rear stabilizer bars, which help keep the CR-V flat and controlled during cornering. The Equinox’s suspension doesn’t offer a rear stabilizer bar.

For better handling and stability, the average track (width between the wheels) on the CR-V is .8 inches wider in the front and 1.4 inches wider in the rear than the track on the Equinox.

The CR-V Touring AWD handles at .82 G’s, while the Equinox LT AWD pulls only .77 G’s of cornering force in a Car and Driver skidpad test.

Chassis

As tested by Car and Driver while at idle, the interior of the CR-V Touring AWD is quieter than the Equinox LT AWD (40 vs. 43 dB).

Passenger Space

The CR-V has 2.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Equinox (105.9 vs. 103.2).

The CR-V has .1 inches more front headroom, .4 inches more front legroom, .9 inches more front hip room, .7 inches more front shoulder room, .7 inches more rear headroom, .7 inches more rear legroom and .1 inches more rear shoulder room than the Equinox.

Cargo Capacity

The CR-V has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Equinox with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 29.9 cubic feet). The CR-V has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Equinox with its rear seat folded (75.8 vs. 63.5 cubic feet).

A low lift-over cargo hatch design makes loading and unloading the CR-V easier. The CR-V’s cargo hatch lift-over height is 26 inches, while the Equinox’s liftover is 28.6 inches.

A standard locking glovebox (which can’t be accessed with the valet key) keeps your small valuables safer in the CR-V. The Equinox doesn’t offer locking storage for small valuables.

Ergonomics

The CR-V EX/EX-L/Touring’s front power windows both open or close with one touch of the switches. The Equinox’s front passenger window doesn’t close automatically.

If the windows are left open on the CR-V the driver can close them all at the outside door handle. On a hot day the driver can lower the windows at the outside door handle or from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Equinox can only close the windows from inside the vehicle, with the ignition on.

The CR-V has a standard locking fuel door with a remote release located convenient to the driver. A locking fuel door helps prevent vandalism, such as sugar in the tank and fuel theft. The Equinox doesn’t offer a locking fuel door.

The CR-V Touring’s standard wipers adjust their speed and turn on and off automatically according to the amount of rainfall on the windshield. The Equinox’s manually variable intermittent wipers have to be constantly adjusted.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) conducts detailed tests on headlights for their range both straight ahead and in curves and to be certain they don’t exceed acceptable amounts of glare to oncoming drivers. The CR-V’s available headlights were rated “Acceptable” by the IIHS, while the Equinox’s headlights are rated “Marginal.”

Economic Advantages

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the CR-V is less expensive to operate than the Equinox because it costs $774 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the CR-V than the Equinox, including $212 less for a water pump, $610 less for a muffler, $155 less for front brake pads, $114 less for fuel injection, $241 less for a fuel pump, $395 less for a timing belt/chain and $41 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Honda CR-V will be $816 to $7349 less than for the Chevrolet Equinox.
