Safety

Both the Fiesta ST and the Civic Type R have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, front wheel drive, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding and rearview cameras.

Warranty

There are almost 3 times as many Ford dealers as there are Honda dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Fiesta ST’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Honda vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 21 more problems per 100 vehicles, Honda is ranked 23rd, below the industry average.

Fuel Economy and Range

On the EPA test cycle the Fiesta ST gets better fuel mileage than the Civic Type R (25 city/32 hwy vs. 22 city/28 hwy).

Tires and Wheels

The Fiesta ST has a standard full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Civic Type R, it requires you to depend on a temporary spare, which has mileage and speed limitations, or roadside assistance and a tow-truck.

Suspension and Handling

The Fiesta ST has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Civic Type R’s suspension doesn’t offer gas-charged shocks.

The Fiesta ST’s front to rear weight distribution is more even (60% to 40%) than the Civic Type R’s (61.8% to 38.2%). This gives the Fiesta ST more stable handling and braking.

For better maneuverability, the Fiesta ST’s turning circle is 4 feet tighter than the Civic Type R’s (35.5 feet vs. 39.5 feet).

Chassis

The Ford Fiesta ST may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 pounds less than the Honda Civic Type R.

The Fiesta ST is 1 foot, 7.3 inches shorter than the Civic Type R, making the Fiesta ST easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The Fiesta ST is 6.1 inches narrower than the Civic Type R, making the Fiesta ST easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

Passenger Space

The Fiesta ST has standard seating for 5 passengers; the Civic Type R can only carry 4.

The Fiesta ST has 1.3 inches more front legroom and .4 inches more rear hip room than the Civic Type R.

Ergonomics

The power windows standard on both the Fiesta ST and the Civic Type R have locks to prevent small children from operating them. When the lock on the Fiesta ST is engaged the driver can still operate all of the windows, for instance to close one opened by a child. The Civic Type R prevents the driver from operating the other windows just as it does the other passengers.
