Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Ford Escape are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Land Rover Discovery Sport doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

Both the Escape and the Discovery Sport have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available collision warning systems, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, front and rear parking sensors, rear cross-path warning and driver alert monitors.

Warranty

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Escape 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Land Rover covers the Discovery Sport. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Discovery Sport ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 18 times as many Ford dealers as there are Land Rover dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Escape’s warranty.

Reliability

A reliable vehicle saves its owner time, money and trouble. Nobody wants to be stranded or have to be without a vehicle while it’s being repaired. Consumer Reports rates the Escape’s reliability 45 points higher than the Discovery Sport.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Escape second among compact suvs in their 2018 Initial Quality Study. The Discovery Sport isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 79 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 31st, below the industry average.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 survey of the owners of three-year-old vehicles provides the long-term dependability statistics that show that Ford vehicles are more reliable than Land Rover vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford 16th in reliability. With 52 more problems per 100 vehicles, Land Rover is ranked 30th.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Escape uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended with the 1.5 turbo 4 cyl. engine for maximum performance). The Discovery Sport requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Escape has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Tires and Wheels

The Escape’s standard tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the Discovery Sport SE’s standard 60 series tires.

Suspension and Handling

The Escape has standard front and rear gas-charged shocks for better control over choppy roads. The Discovery Sport’s suspension doesn’t offer rear gas-charged shocks.

The Escape’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

The Escape Titanium AWD handles at .85 G’s, while the Discovery Sport HSE pulls only .82 G’s of cornering force in a Motor Trend skidpad test.

Chassis

The Ford Escape may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 400 to 450 pounds less than the Land Rover Discovery Sport.

The Escape is 9.1 inches narrower than the Discovery Sport, making the Escape easier to handle and maneuver in traffic.

The front grille of the Escape (except 2.0L ECOBoost) uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

Passenger Space

The Escape has 1.1 inches more front legroom and .3 inches more rear headroom than the Discovery Sport.

Cargo Capacity

The Escape has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat up than the Discovery Sport with its rear seat up (34 vs. 6.8 cubic feet). The Escape has a much larger cargo area with its rear seat folded than the Discovery Sport with its rear seat folded (68 vs. 62.8 cubic feet).

Ergonomics

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Escape SE/SEL/Titanium’s exterior keypad. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer an exterior keypad entry system, and its InControl can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

To shield the driver and front passenger’s vision over a larger portion of the windshield and side windows, the Escape has standard extendable sun visors. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer extendable visors.

The Escape Titanium has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Escape is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Discovery Sport doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

The Ford Escape outsold the Land Rover Discovery Sport by almost 25 to one during the 2018 model year.
