Safety

For enhanced safety, the front seat shoulder belts of the Ford Edge are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The BMW X6 doesn’t offer height-adjustable seat belts.

The rear seatbelts optional on the Edge inflate when a collision is detected, helping to spread crash forces over a much larger area of the body and limiting head and neck movement. This can help prevent spinal and internal injuries. The X6 doesn’t offer inflatable seatbelts.

The Edge has standard Post Collision Braking, which automatically apply the brakes in the event of a crash to help prevent secondary collisions and prevent further injuries. The X6 doesn’t offer a post collision braking system: in the event of a collision that triggers the airbags, more collisions are possible without the protection of airbags that may have already deployed.

To help make backing safer, the Edge’s cross-path warning system uses wide-angle radar in the rear bumper to alert the driver to vehicles approaching from the side, helping the driver avoid collisions. The X6 doesn’t offer a cross-path warning system.

Both the Edge and the X6 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, available all wheel drive and front and rear parking sensors.

Warranty

Ford’s powertrain warranty covers the Edge 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than BMW covers the X6. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the X6 ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 9 times as many Ford dealers as there are BMW dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Edge’s warranty.

Reliability

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Ford vehicles are better in initial quality than BMW vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Ford fifth in initial quality, above the industry average. With 6 more problems per 100 vehicles, BMW is ranked 11th.

Engine

The Edge ST’s standard 2.7 turbo V6 produces 33 more horsepower (335 vs. 302) and 85 lbs.-ft. more torque (380 vs. 295) than the X6 s/xDrive35i’s standard 3.0 turbo 6 cyl.

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Ford Edge uses regular unleaded gasoline (premium recommended for maximum performance). The X6 requires premium, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Edge has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The X6 doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Suspension and Handling

The Edge’s drift compensation steering can automatically compensate for road conditions which would cause the vehicle to drift from side to side, helping the driver to keep the vehicle straight more easily. The X6 doesn’t offer drift compensation steering.

For better maneuverability, the Edge’s turning circle is 1.6 feet tighter than the X6’s (40.4 feet vs. 42 feet).

Chassis

The Ford Edge may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs about 600 to 650 pounds less than the BMW X6.

The Edge is 5 inches shorter than the X6, making the Edge easier to handle, maneuver and park in tight spaces.

The front grille of the Edge uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The X6 doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Edge Sport uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The X6 doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Edge has 12.5 cubic feet more passenger volume than the X6 (113.9 vs. 101.4).

The Edge has .3 inches more front headroom, 2.3 inches more front legroom, 2.4 inches more rear headroom, 5 inches more rear legroom and 2.6 inches more rear shoulder room than the X6.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Edge’s rear seats recline. The X6’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the X6 with its rear seat up (39.2 vs. 26.6 cubic feet). The Edge has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the X6 with its rear seat folded (73.4 vs. 59.7 cubic feet).

Pressing a switch automatically lowers the Edge SEL/Titanium/ST’s rear seats, to make changing between passengers and cargo easier. The X6 doesn’t offer automatic folding seats.

Ergonomics

The Edge offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The X6 doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

In case you lock your keys in your vehicle, or don’t have them with you, you can let yourself in using the Edge’s exterior PIN entry system. The X6 doesn’t offer an exterior PIN entry system, and its BMW Assist can’t unlock the doors if the vehicle doesn’t have cell phone reception or the driver can’t contact the service.

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Edge has a standard rear wiper. The X6 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

The Edge (except SE) offers an optional 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The X6 doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Edge owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Edge will cost $6940 to $8545 less than the X6 over a five-year period.

According to The Car Book by Jack Gillis, the Edge is less expensive to operate than the X6 because it costs $252 less to do the manufacturer’s suggested maintenance for 50,000 miles. Typical repairs cost much less on the Edge than the X6, including $859 less for a water pump, $805 less for a muffler, $115 less for front brake pads, $461 less for a starter, $207 less for fuel injection, $392 less for a fuel pump, $237 less for front struts and $1393 less for a power steering pump.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Ford Edge will be $31583 to $39867 less than for the BMW X6.
