Safety

For enhanced safety, the front and middle seat shoulder belts of the Dodge Journey are height-adjustable to accommodate a wide variety of driver and passenger heights. A better fit can prevent injuries and the increased comfort also encourages passengers to buckle up. The Audi Allroad has only front height-adjustable seat belts.

The Dodge Journey offers optional built in child booster seats. They’re more crash worthy than an added child seat because of their direct attachment to the seat. Audi doesn’t offer the convenience and security of a built-in child booster seat in the Allroad. Their owners must carry a heavy booster seat in and out of the vehicle; Journey owners can just fold their built-in child seat up or down.

Both the Journey and the Allroad have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, plastic fuel tanks, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, daytime running lights, rearview cameras and available rear parking sensors.

Warranty

Dodge’s powertrain warranty covers the Journey 1 year and 10,000 miles longer than Audi covers the Allroad. Any repair needed on the engine, transmission, axles, joints or driveshafts is fully covered for 5 years or 60,000 miles. Coverage on the Allroad ends after only 4 years or 50,000 miles.

There are almost 8 times as many Dodge dealers as there are Audi dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Journey’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably power the ignition and other systems and to recharge the battery, the Journey has a standard 160-amp alternator. The Allroad’s 150-amp alternator isn’t as powerful.

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Journey has a standard 525-amp battery. The Allroad’s 420-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2018 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Dodge vehicles are better in initial quality than Audi vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Dodge 19th in initial quality. With 7 more problems per 100 vehicles, Audi is ranked 25th.

Engine

The Journey’s optional 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 35 more horsepower (283 vs. 248) than the Allroad’s 2.0 turbo 4 cyl.

Fuel Economy and Range

To lower fuel costs and make buying fuel easier, the Dodge Journey uses regular unleaded gasoline. The Allroad requires premium for maximum efficiency, which can cost 20 to 55 cents more per gallon.

The Journey FWD’s standard fuel tank has 5.2 gallons more fuel capacity than the Allroad (20.5 vs. 15.3 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups. The Journey AWD’s standard fuel tank has 5.8 gallons more fuel capacity than the Allroad (21.1 vs. 15.3 gallons).

Environmental Friendliness

The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) certifies the Dodge Journey as a “Partial Zero Emissions Vehicle” (PZEV). The Audi Allroad is only certified to “Ultra Low Emissions Vehicle” (ULEV) standards.

Tires and Wheels

For better ride, handling and brake cooling the Journey Crossroad/GT has standard 19-inch wheels. The Allroad’s largest wheels are only 18-inches.

Suspension and Handling

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Journey’s wheelbase is 2.9 inches longer than on the Allroad (113.8 inches vs. 110.9 inches).

Passenger Space

The Journey offers optional seating for 7 passengers; the Allroad can only carry 5.

The Journey has 29.7 cubic feet more passenger volume than the Allroad (121.7 vs. 92).

The Journey has 1.7 inches more front headroom, 1.6 inches more front shoulder room, 2.5 inches more rear headroom, .4 inches more rear legroom and 2.4 inches more rear shoulder room than the Allroad.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Journey’s middle and third row seats recline. The Allroad’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Journey’s cargo area provides more volume than the Allroad.

Ergonomics

The Journey offers a remote vehicle starting system, so the vehicle can be started from inside the driver's house. This allows the driver to comfortably warm up the engine before going out to the vehicle. The climate system will also automatically heat or cool the interior. The Allroad doesn’t offer a remote starting system.

The Journey’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge – which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Allroad does not have an oil pressure gauge.

On a hot day the Journey’s driver can lower the front windows from a distance using the keyless remote. The driver of the Allroad can’t use the remote to operate the windows.

The Journey GT has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Allroad doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

Model Availability

The Journey is available in both front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Allroad doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Economic Advantages

Insurance will cost less for the Journey owner. The Complete Car Cost Guide estimates that insurance for the Journey will cost $1450 to $2825 less than the Allroad over a five-year period.

IntelliChoice estimates that five-year ownership costs (depreciation, financing, insurance, fuel, fees, repairs and maintenance) for the Dodge Journey will be $11267 to $15515 less than for the Audi Allroad.

Recommendations

The Dodge Journey outsold the Audi A4/S4 by almost three to one during 2018.
